2017-2018 flu season: 61,000 (the deadliest season of the last decade) 

Flu season is 5-6 months

This is with a vaccine available

45,000 people have died from COVID-19 in a span of a month in the United States

The point is that this is an unknown VIRUS. You should take precaution when there are any dangers that are UNKNOWN and UNPREDICTABLE. They even did research on how smokers tend to be less in hospitals or catch the virus, but it's not clear yet. WE KNOW NOTHING

I mean, my flatmate had it and I was asymptomatic, so was his girlfriend and my other housemate and I’m sure we must’ve also caught it so I’m not really surprised that far more people have had it than we think.

as others have said there’s no herd immunity, flu strains come around every few years and we can usually predict what strains will be prevalent and help protect the most vulnerable with vaccines.  I also think this is a bit more severe than flu, my friends who are doctors on covid wards say it’s really distressing seeing the numbers dying/the manner in which people simply cannot breathe

edit: the only flu strain that we can even remotely compare covid-19 to is H1N1 when it first emerged in 1917/18

To me the one of biggest issues with COVID-19 has to do with how infectious it is and the fact that there are a handful of people who have it, don’t know it, and are out and about spreading it.

I don't think some of you realize that the WORLD has essentially shut down and COVID-19 is still making the flu look like a JOKE. 

If we literally did NOTHING and lived our lives there would be MILLIONS dying from COVID-19 this YEAR.

Only in the US it was predicted there could be 1-2 MILLION deaths had we literally taken zero precautions.

Seasonal flu is called seasonal for a reason. 

The fact that u think this happened with social distancing makes little sense. Most people got it before the lockdowns. They were just tested after.

People have been getting infected weeks after social distancing measures were put in place. You don't have to be a genius to realize the numbers would be much higher had we done nothing. 

Many are asymptomatic as well, but have still infected others who presented symptoms. Enough. 

I don't know what this agenda you have is but it's disturbing to keep telling people to treat this as any regular flu. We don't have a vaccine, we don't have a treatment for the severely sick that we know for sure will work, ENOUGH.

I get your point. The problem is that some people dont want to accept this kind of evidence.

They dont want to know more about the virus. They want x measure, to blame y and they do that by picking and choosing what it is important for the virus.

This study is important. Similar studies are important. Lets not minimize them, because we dont like the results.

Influenza kills anywhere from 250-500k worldwide every year.

We are currently at 181k deaths, most of these occurring in the last 1-2 months. With social distancing measures across the world.

I have asthma, so it terrifies me.  I'm more concerned they're going to open schools back up and I'll be back working in a petri dish before it's safe to do so.  We will find out this week if we are going back after May 15 or not.

All you did was post a sentence which gives us nothing.

The article's title focuses on infections being more prevalent than thought and I'd like to know what the article actually says.

It's still wild to me how many people can be asymptomatic. My boyfriend is convinced he had it because he *never* gets sick, and he had these mild symptoms for about a week and a half in early March. I live with him, so if he had it, I would of gotten it. I never got sick.

A day or two before he got sick we also went to a massive event at a conference center in a city next to us, which is now the epicenter of the virus in our state  So, I sincerely hope we didn't have it. I'm ready for anti body tests.
