It seems like 2020 is fast becoming the year of the Neanderthals since four months into the year, and we’ve already discovered a great deal about them and their abilities as an ancient hominid species. The latest discovery about them is revealed in a new study indicating that a handful of randy Neanderthals (possibly just around 20 individuals) is responsible for all of the DNA that can be found in us modern-day humans.

Per the study, Neanderthal ancestry in modern humans can be explained by one major mixing event, where a group of 20 or so Neanderthal individuals came into contact with modern humans after the ancient species expanded from Africa.

"Our results imply that several Neanderthal individuals contributed genetic material, but it's difficult to say if it was a question of tens, or hundreds, or an even larger number. It's certainly possible that modern humans and Neanderthals lived side by side for some period of time, but it's also possible that these were only sporadic encounters," Dr. Bergstrom said.
