It was all a calculated move to keep Obama's strong independent support which very few other major politicians have. Honestly can't blame him tho he knows how to work the game in his favor. I think you're reading this a little wrong. Obama wasn't going to throw his weight behind *anyone* during the primary. It wasn't like he was waiting to back Biden. He endorsed Biden because Biden became the presumptive nominee. That was Obama's stance. This wasn't some bizarro deep state calculation that he made to undermine Bernie (and I say this as someone who stumped *hard* for Sanders). This has been clear for months now. Obama recognizes the unique political capital he brings especially against Trump (can invigorate both dems *and* conservatives to get out and vote, a tricky line to toe) and as such was going to stay out of the nomination process until it dwindled. He stepped in when it was obvious Bernie wasn't getting the nomination to try to do his part as a party leader and bring unity. Another reason he likely stayed out was because he either publicly endorsed or employed at least half of the former candidates at one point or another in the last 10 years. To endorse one over another earlier would be suicide should the latter have gotten the endorsement. I believe that that was more of his calculation. They’re disgusting, and the people who posted them in the first place are disgusting.
