EMUs, ROMs, a TL;DR by Seeka

Okay. From the looks of it, some of y'all are bored. One way to fix that?

Videogames.

So here is a crash course on some modern ways to play older games.

You can play console games on your computer.

What do you need?

EMUs and ROMs.

An EMU, while being a giant bird, is a program on a computer that replicates how a videogame console works.

A ROM is a file that replicates the game.

Together, you can play games from consoles. To further said experience, I suggest in investing in a controller for your computer.

The EMUs I currently have:

DeSmuME (DS)

Virtual Boy Advance (GBA)

PPSSPP (PSP)

Dolphin (Wii and GameCube)

ePSXe (PlayStation 1)

PCSX 2 (PS2)

Before anyone asks, no, EMUs and ROMs aren't legal, but it's not something you're going to be actively chased after. It's akin to ripping music from YouTube.

Technically, emulators are totally legal, and roms can be if you ripped from your own game... so you can at least invent a excuse if the police knock in your door :P

I don't know how to write in english

Honey you and I both know that we legally don't own seven thousand games.

There's more than emu paradise fortunately. Just search "Legend of Zelda Minish cap rom" into Google and you should find it.

Okay. So videogames come out on consoles, right? Well, while a lot of them are being remade, that is only a tiny percentile of games in history.

So there are two ways to play these games.

Get the console needed if you don't already have it. And then find a physical copy of that game.

Or you can use an emulator and ROM without spending any money and the only time spent is searching and downloading.

not Chromatica

But anyways, I dabbled with homebrewing my Wii the other day and everything went fine, but after I downloaded some new games on my drive the USB Loader GX started crashing... This has already happened to me before and I think I finally gave up now.

Well if you have a halfway decent antivirus you shouldn't have to worry about sites being sketchy. Also, if it appears on the first or second page of Google results, that means a lot of other people are using it too right?

I love playing classic Pokemon games on a big screen by running them through my laptop on Virtual Boy Advance then connecting my laptop to my flatscreen

I used to have a PS1 emulator but I've been playing my actual PS1 a lot in quarantine! I'm highly interested in getting that PS2 emulator tho... I recently found my Hulk: Ultimate Destruction disc and really wanna play it again

My old cat is a tough man, but i cant deny the way he bites my hand and he stabs me, he grabs me by my heart <3

Emulators are total legal to have on your computer. What’s not legal is downloading the rom for a game you don’t actually own.

BUT, in this modern world, it’s difficult to obtain older video game consoles and games due to their cost, limited supply, collectors, etc. So, I feel most developers mostly don’t care too much for roms being found online, in addition that many of these games development companies don’t even exist anymore.
