The official theme is "Costume Art".

"Bolton has conceived an exhibition that addresses "the centrality of the dressed body in the museum's vast collection," by pairing paintings, sculptures, and other objects spanning the 5,000 years of art represented in The Met, alongside historical and contemporary garments from the Costume Institute."

"What connects every curatorial department and what connects every single gallery in the museum is fashion, or the dressed body," Bolton says. "I's the common thread throughout the whole museum, which is really what the initial idea for the exhibition was, this epiphany: I know that we've often been seen as the stepchild, but, in fact, the dressed body is front and center in every gallery you come across. Even the nude is never naked," he continues. "I's always inscribed with cultural values and ideas."

No that's this one ! It was announced a few months ago as Costume Art

" The latest Met Gala theme is “Costume Art,” inspired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s vast collection and the connective tissue that runs through it all—the dressed body. Curator in charge of the Costume Institute, Andrew Bolton, said in a recent interview that the core idea is this: no matter which gallery you’re perusing in the world-famous museum, you’ll be exploring the relationship between clothing and the human form. "

Every year I care less about it and it seems more and more excessive and out of touch....

I think every year they have different themes for the exhibition and the red carpet.

They are supposed to be connected. In this case I believe it’s the same idea presented slightly differently
