Early data analyzed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows that younger Americans are at substantial risk of experiencing serious medical problems from the coronavirus sweeping the globe.

That data runs counter to some of the early messaging from public health officials in other parts of the world.

A new CDC analysis of more than 2,400 cases of COVID-19 that have occurred in the United States in the last month shows that at least 1 in 7 and perhaps as many as 1 in 5 people between the ages of 20 and 44 who contract the virus require hospitalization, a level exponentially higher than the hospitalization rates for influenza.

Between 2 percent and 4 percent of people that young are admitted to intensive care units. The fatality rate is low, only 0.1 percent to 0.2 percent, but is about two times higher than a bad flu season.

Well in China were the majority of the cases are the possibility of dying from the COVID-19 is for 0.2% for people in ages between 10-39. Something doesn't quite add up.

With the death rates among young ones so low I didn't imagine as many as 1 in 5 might require hospitlization :duck:

That's why it's important to flatten the curve. Otherwise 1 in 5 could die.

This data says the same. 0.2%

Finally people will hopefully grasp the severity of this virus and take it more seriously... it effects everyone, not just older people. And its death rate is pretty high also

But it ain't 21.9%

Some of you really need to take a step back and realize the hypocrisy of what you’re saying; this isn’t a direct reply to any one person but I’ve literally seen posts about the selfishness of people in one part and then something akin to “...they deserve whatever comes.” in the next. That’s not compassion and most certainly not empathy.

It’s easy to say “I’m social distancing” when you’re a student or have another safety net but the majority or Americans 23-40 are burdened with student debt, cannot afford to lose their hourly jobs and insurance, and the decision about whether to risk contracting a virus that we keep being told is going to get 75% of us inevitably or risk losing their job, home, and healthcare is not one that is made lightly.

Use your brains and stop believing the images the media is feeding you all day about Americans on beaches; that isn’t reality for 99.9% of us. Stop making me feel worse because I’m not sacrificing literally my entire livelihood because governments and agencies that have had conflicting info since the start tell me now I need to throw everything away when I’m still 70% likely to get a virus that’s not acted like it should since day one and now suddenly might kill me? These rates are absurd and need scrutiny.

People in that age group won’t listen until it’s too late. Shows how entitled some of them think they are as if none of these issues could ever affect them.

boomers dont listen either.. have you seen all the conspiracy theories believers? they dont party on florida beaches but they sure dont take the measures seriously.

Seriously stop fearmongering.

There's not a single scientific prospect right now that kills off the virus, and predictions are even that 60% of the world population will be infected by it, now or after the lockdown. Total lockdown? Stay inside? For how long?!

Some measures to slow down the spread are okay, but I really believe that with advances in medical research, a vaccin / antivirals can be released on the market quicker than was possible before.

Now here is what is important: stay away from elderly if you socialize a lot or feel even slightly sick. They are the real victims. Not those who have a 0.1% fatality. In the end we need group immunity.

Oh and for the Americans, don't just applaud health care workers, but vote for Bernie, or shut up about a healthcare system not being able to handle this. They need a coin, not applause.
