If you don’t know by now, you will never know. And we can’t help you

Well, here's my opinion then

Aura : dated EDM (even when it was released), instrumental recycled from an old demo from Infect Mushroom. The theme of the song (=look who I really am) has been done countless times before
Venus : pretty timeless and unique I must say, but nothing futuristic about it
G.U.Y. : sounds just like every other song that Zedd produced in 2011, 2 years before ARTPOP was released, dated EDM
Sexxx Dreams : cute, but nothing futuristic about it
J&D : the rap collabs were already old, the title is so cliché for a rap collab song
Manicure : cute, but nothing futuristic about it
DWUW : ok sounded pretty futuristic at the time, and very fresh
ARTPOP : sounds just like I Love You Like A Love Song released in 2011
Swine : maybe the rawness of the song was futuristic at that point for such a mainstream artist
Donatella : old recycled instrumental, dated EDM
Fashion! : cute, but nothing futuristic about it
Dope : basic ballad
Gypsy : cute, but nothing futuristic about it
Applause : cute, but nothing futuristic about it

I think you're looking at it the wrong way. You can't compare ARTPOP to something it never was nor was trying to be. It wasn't an underground / indie / niche album and in that sense, no, it wasn't futuristic. However, for a mainstream pop album, which it definitely was, a lot of things about it were ahead of its time. The way it boldly and meaningfully implemented relevant electronic music genres into the pop formula, the off-kilter vocals (which are a must nowadays), the graphic themes it depicted and the overall sense of irony that's present throughout, the complexity... none of these aspects were exactly a given in 2013 pop and you gotta give it that.

Its interesting that she says that, because to me it seems as though popular music since ARTPOP has very deliberately moved away from that maximalist EDM sounds and moved into more subdued, minimal spaces. ARTPOP very much belongs to the year it was released.

Been saying it since 2013. :green: ARTPOP wasn't what most of us were expecting, but I can still listen to it today and be impressed with how much is going on. It's densely layered.

So it sounds like you like ARTPOP but you don’t think it’s “futuristic”? Why not just hate it and then blame it on it’s lack of futuristicness? A crash course lesson in criticism: Don’t contradict yourself. If you don’t want to praise ARTPOP for being “ahead of the time”, praise it for being motherf*cking timeless :firega:

This is like the first time she’s explicitly talked about ARTPOP since it was released :air:

justice for ARTPOP indeed

How was EDM in 2013 ahead of its time? lol. It’s probably my favorite Gaga album but let’s not pretend it didn’t already sound dated when it came out.

everyone saying that ARTPOP wasnt futuristic musically, isn’t looking at the ideas, concepts, and execution that gaga wanted to do with the era.

i forget where i read it, but someone said camp is much more understood and appreciated nowadays than it was 7 years ago. the met gala having it as their theme last year (with gaga as the “main attraction”) is enough of an example.

if ARTPOP’s aesthetics and concepts were carried out today along with the music, they’d be much more successful
