bttm4ladyguga 11
You know, I think Gaga might connect better with audiences if she didn't describe her about-to-be-released albums as either life-changing or the sound of the future or the sound to define the millennium. Hyperbole like that just invites scrutiny and dissection. ARTPOP is a decent pop album. Nothing more. Isn't that enough?

Gaga’s work has always been camp, even since The Fame.

DrewPa 3,762
I Think « it was ahead of its time” is the favorite sentence artists use to explain why their work flopped hard, I heard it like a billion times seriously, I don’t think it’s true, since nobody made that sound in mainstream pop ever since (At least, not that I’m aware of) the album wasn’t “ahead of its time”, it was better than that: it was proudly, unapologetically, FURIOUSLY out of any fashion, or for better saying, exactly as she did with Born This Way, Gaga tried to CREATE a trend more than follow one, and sadly, for several reasons it didn’t work I'm a real Fire CRRRACKERRR
JustJames 950
1. Gaga, you are allowed to joke around, but you can't engage in social media with a comment like "i don't remember ARTPOP," and then abandon the conversation after it erupts and expect people to understand that it was an attempt at humor. I love her, but when she dismisses her own role in creating a lot of the chaos that has surround her and deflects it 100% onto fans, not just random internet trolls but FANS, it can be a little disheartening. 2. In 2013, the music scene was dominated by the likes of Lorde and Miley Cyrus, who were taking a much different approach to pop than the dance-heavy beats of the late 2011 releases. Pop was much more raw and brought in calmer influences from R&B, hip-hop, etc. ARTPOP was loud, abrasive, and over-the-top EDM that overpowered the vulnerable message, concept, and lyrics in songs like Dope vs. MJH (the crash after the high), Aura vs. Applause (the muse fighting against the art that makes her live), DWUW vs. Swine (the broken victim of the industry against the angry fighter), MANiCURE vs. GUY (the desire to be loved yet unable to relinquish control), Sexxx Dreams vs. Gypsy (using infidelity to avoid the feeling of being weak and wanting to just escape with one's lover).... she had her competitors beat when it came to the depth of her music. Covering it with EDM was just another piece of the enigma, and it unfortunately is still not understood and dominates the discussion. 3. How many criticize 2020GA for not being TikTok-able? Music is in a place where the charts are dominated by songs that are the most meme-able. Dance Monkey sounds like an Eiffel 64 reject and will be up for a ROTY Grammy. You don't see how this landscape is much more open to a bridge where she recites the planets with lines like "DON'T YOU KNOW MY A*S IS FAMOUS?" or, the entire double-meaning of G.U.Y. + "GET ON TOP OF ME!," or the intro of Aura? You can't imagine "I KILLED MY FORMER AND LEFT HER IN THE DRUNK ON HIGHWAY TEN" against a video of 2 friends feuding or something? I don't think Gaga claims to have been the inventor of the meme-able culture of today, or to be the main influence of how camp has been integrated into everyday culture. But, in a music landscape dominated by cringe memes, ARTPOP, that took an ironic and almost dark-humored approach to deep and raw and personal music through camp and overproduction, would definitely be more appreciated because it would be LISTENED to. The theme of the song (=look who I really am) has been done countless times before Venus : pretty timeless and unique I must say, but nothing futuristic about it G.U.Y. : sounds just like every other song that Zedd produced in 2011, 2 years before ARTPOP was released, dated EDM Sexxx Dreams : cute, but nothing futuristic about it J&D : the rap collabs were already old, the title is so cliché for a rap collab song Manicure : cute, but nothing futuristic about it DWUW : ok sounded pretty futuristic at the time, and very fresh ARTPOP : sounds just like I Love You Like A Love Song released in 2011 Swine : maybe the rawness of the song was futuristic at that point for such a mainstream artist Donatella : old recycled instrumental, dated EDM Fashion! : cute, but nothing futuristic about it Dope : basic ballad Gypsy : cute, but nothing futuristic about it Applause : cute, but nothing futuristic about it Preach

The sound of Aura, the frankesteined structure of Venus, the electricity on G.U.Y., the dark sex aesthetic on Sexxx Dreams, the subversion of Jewels n Drugs, an R&B masterpiece with DWUW, the industrial sound on Swine, the explosion of techno and big vocals on Donatella and Fashion!, the acid trip of MJH, the straight forward depression on Dope and, as the perfect ending, an 80's sound Applause. Had it been released today, it would still be ahead. That’s exactly what makes me dislike it. I like the songs separately but the whole album lacks cohesion and ya’ll can’t deny it. The way the album is put together is A MESS. Sorry, I swear I’ve tried to like it.

Genuine Guy 09 13,941
There was nothing ahead of its time about it. It felt rushed, under cooked, and basic. She had a fully realised album and interscope told her no (probably because it was very experimental; see stache) and then they obviously had to change it quick time. Also, the music may have not been up there for Gaga, but the actual launch and management of the era was 10x worse. Stare at the Chartster in the mirror they talk to me too. #StreamFunTonight
