????????????????? what are you smoking sis?

the last pandemic (H1N1 flu virus) literally killed 575,400 people .  In the US alone, more than 13'000 people died.

Infected people? 500 MILLION WW and 61 MILLION IN THE US

so no...corona virus is nothing compared to other stuff we had to deal with. Even if we had to wait 3 to 4 year for a vaccine (which won't be the case btw) it still wouldn't come near those numbers.

It has just started.

This virus is more contagious and more deadly than the 2009 H1N1 strain.

It’s completely different.

H1N1 had a CFR (basically death rate) of 0,5%-0,1%.

COVID-19 is around 2-4%. (some countries and regions have it higher or lower)

R0 (how many people on average will be infected by 1 person) is between 2-6. H1N1 was 1.2-1.4.

Between 20-10% of COVID-19 patients need hospitalization and around 5% need respirators and go to ICU.

Have you seen what’s happening in N. Italy and Iran and what happened in Wuhan?

Italian doctors need to choose who TO SAVE. In some zones, people over 60 are not given respirators. (Basically means they will die). Consider Healthcare in Italy is one of the best worldwide (I believe it was ranked 2nd place)

Also, WHO reported around 20 000 deaths of H1N1 at first, but the numbers are likely to be way higher.

We have similar diseases coming out every 5-10 years, so meh.

Not pandemics. There are some outbreak several times like Ebola in 2014 or Zika in 2016 but a pandemic is rare. Last pandemic was swine flu in 2009 but it had a death rate of less than 1 so it wasn't that dangerous. Covid-19 has a 3% death rate and it's dofferent in each country (it's at 6% in Italy). So no it's not something that we should get used to.

Also consider many “mild cases” can go basically from a cold to pneumonia.

Obviously some

I'm sorry if I sounded harsh and it made you think I didn't care for those people. I do. but at the end of the day, a regular flu is more dangerous for them than corona is

Healthy people can beat pneumonia at home, but even so, many will likely get severely ill.

And no, this virus is stronger than regular flu.

But this was just as deadly as the flu. WHO declared that in 2009-2010 more than 60 million people have been infected by swine flu and "only" 300 000 died. If 100 millions people get infected by coronavirus then it will be waaay more deadly, that's what people who think "it's just a flu" can't understand. We just can't let that spread to the whole world.

we'll be fine, the media loves drama they r vampires suckin on drama every chance they get. it'll die in warmer temperatures, in 2 years there'll be a vaccine, could come back next winter but less intense nobody will report on it. as for now avoid public transportations

Stop blaming the media on everything. They aren't the ones spreading the disease. If anyone freaks out. Like the thousands committing hate crimes against Asians due to this virus, that's on them. Not the media.

Also, we don't know if the virus is immune to the heat as the virus is already in the southern hemisphere. And it's summer there. If you aren't going to listen to the media, then at least listen to the experts instead of assuming what is going on. Because some experts don't even know how the virus will adapt in hotter climates. It's already in Brazil and Singapore. We can't treat this the same as the seasonal flu yet. We have to let the experts figure it out. You can't shade the media and then go making your own assumptions. We simply don't have the information yet.

Avoiding public transportation isn't going to stop this. You might as well avoid leaving your home in that case.

60 million people was only the US. The swine flu killed 500 million people WW!! And deaths in the US were 13.000. If we really get a vaccine next year corona numbers will never be that high.

I wanted to stock up on TP/some foods when I get paid Friday, and hopefully before positives started popping up in my area (michigan) buuuuut it happened last night. :triggered:

Amazon is almost totally sold out of TP and I'm a smidge paranoid. It's not like I'm worried there will be NONE but I don't want to risk having to drive all over and deal with people panicking in stores, so I want to stock up NOW and get a few months worth. I'm going to try to avoid the store as much as possible, so I'm buying a ton of meat/boxed foods so I can limit my interaction in public areas.

I am so mad at people who keep saying saying ItS juSt ThE fLu, the MEdiA is DuM. People are still dying and it is NOT fun to experience if you do get it.

The problem is that unlike the swine flu, this coronavirus is deadlier. The H1N1 had a death rate of 0.08% at its peak, which is very low for a flu. Also relevant is that the reproduction number (basically the average number of people that will be infected from an interaction from an infected person) for the swine flu was around 1.5, when for the coronavirus the estimate ranges from 2.1-4.8. At best it is 140% more infectious than the H1N1 flu and at worst it is 320% more infectious. So you have a disease here that is both deadlier AND more infectious than the swine flu. The coronavirus is getting out of control really quickly, and it does have the potential to be really bad (it already is really bad in some places).

You know?

Many Italians thought the same thing as you did 2 weeks ago. Now they’re under national lockdown.
