Klou 2,414
But it's not a matter of people checking out the song to see what it is. It's a dance craze that everyone wants to try out and make their own videos for, and even more people who want to watch these videos. Exactly. They're watching the video for the video, not the song. What is the Hot 100 for? Songs, not videos.
Cherry 17
Exactly. They're watching the video for the video, not the song. What is the Hot 100 for? Songs, not videos. And the song is a major part of the viral videos, and with no song there'd be no dance. You're trying to make it a lot more complicated than what it really is. And as the song is #1 on iTunes, that kinda kills your whole argument.
Arturo 40,746
I'd like to see a formula where Sales are about 50% and Radio and Streaming (inc. youtube) are each about 25%. This. So simple and easy.

What in the heck are you talking about Did I EVER mention Harlem Shake? I said "there are scenarios". And to your other point it actually isn't #1 on iTunes. Thrift Shop is still ahead of it with both versions.
Cherry 17
Sales: 50% Streaming: 35% Radio: 15% would make the most sense since it would place the most emphasis on what the public decides to listen to, not what programmers tell them they should listen to. And regardless of where the song is on iTunes when you combine versions, the song is one of the most popular songs on iTunes at the moment which completely negates your argument that the memes are popular and not the song itself. No, I purposely was not referring to the song because people do seem to like the song. I guess I didn't really make it clear. I'm referring to songs that would get a boost from YouTube views that don't coincide with their sales. Friday would be a good example.
Cherry 17
"Friday" most likely wouldn't have been a #1 hit because it lacked the sales "Harlem" has. Would it have been a top ten hit? Most likely. Was it one of the top ten most popular, talked-about, well-known songs/videos in the country when it came out 2 years ago? (Wow, time flies.) Absolutely. Social media has completely changed the way people consume music and the charts have to change to reflect that otherwise the top ten consists solely of Maroon 5 and Katy Perry songs that aren't making any sort of impact outside of radio. pie-kun 1,765
It's just a mess, IMO the most objective way to rank songs is based on sales. It's basically how every other form of media, including albums, are ranked and it makes the most sense. We all know that YouTube views are not the most accurate way to judge a song's popularity, there's plenty of songs out there that have over 100 million views and have yet to sell a million copies in the US and plenty of songs that are 3x+ platinum that aren't even at 70 million views. At least this will be good for Gaga's debuts, but I think #1s will have a whole lot less meaning now and Adele better start filming music videos again. Mills 446
Glad that S&S tops the 2 million mark. And it would be only a matter of a week for Kelly Clarkson to have yet another platinum hit in her hands as CMB has now sold 980K in total. S&T and WIWYM are also likely hitting platinum in the coming weeks.
Magoo 6
I'll only be looking at digital sales from now on. BB Hot 100 has become meaningless
Mills 446
The sudden chart rules change made by Billboard may not be greatly welcomed for now, but even Billboard needs to adapt to the changing times. Now, whether this change would be for the better or for the worse in the long run, it's still highly debatable. But does not YouTube views nowadays hint what's hot at the moment? Did not VEVO / YouTube have already replace MTV as the dominant medium for the young demographics to listen to their favourite music (and watch their favourite music videos) a long time ago? With that said, why not give it a chance first?
Pop Art 1,773
lol with this new rule every single by gaga, katy, rihanna, beiber will probally go 1 atleast for sure top 10,they always get really much views the first week of their new videos I mean even marry the night got like 20 000 000 million views the first week and with this new rule it could have got top 10 or at least easy top 20 Plus, when she releases her videos, her songs generally get bumped up for a while on iTunes, so it's a win-win situation. However, this idea would probably only work for her later singles, or, more specifically, the ones that are struggling to sell within the Top 10 on iTunes. In other instances, she should release the video at the same time or soon after the release of the song.
