Arturo 40,746
I disagree. Buzz started to form around Harlem Shake this week. It's hardly the most influential song out there at the moment. The initial spark occurred this week, but Thrift shop was still more popular. Thrift shop was streamed more, purchased twice as much, and garnered about 100 times more airplay than HS. The only category that HS won was youtube views. It's obvious that Thrift Shop was still the larger song. Seriously, my view is unbiased because I hate HS and loooove TS, but HS was obviously bigger. The impact it had in a week > anything TS has achieved so far culturally. I'm not surprised that TS is selling more considering it's an actual song. People aren't buying HS as much as TS because it's not a "let me listen to this because I like it" song. It's a "let's listen to it so we can make our own parody song". Obviously that leaves many people with the idea that its useless to buy the song if you're only going to use it once. That makes up for its "lack" of sales. It exploded last week. Hate the song, but it deserves to be there if we're measuring popularity.
Cherry 17
Tommy, I mean this in the least offensive way possible, but are you living under a rock? It's not some kind of small buzz or "initial spark". The viral videos set to this song are about as popular right now as "Gangnam Style" was some time ago. "Harlem Shake" is by far the biggest and most popular song in America at the moment. Popularity isn't dictated only by sales. The YouTube views speak for themselves, really. And this is clearly no fluke. "HS" is #3 in Scotland and the UK, #15 in New Zealand, #16 in the Netherlands, and #38 in Ireland, and I'm sure there will be others as it undoubtedly continues to get even more huge. Ozzy8923 9
I disagree, wholeheartedly. Anyone can click on a video and have it play in the background just to get a view. Stanbases already do it, especially ones for acts like JB, 1D, etc. Not to mention their fans fawn over their videos. What 13 year old girls like does not equal a reflection in public taste. Payola doesn't happen. We all joke about it, but it doesn't. Radio deals certainly do, but only to get the songs out there being heard. Once their heard, it's up to public reaction and audience numbers whether the song is smashing or flopping. BB's continuing to discount radio is a very bad thing, and counting EVERY single video that's on YT of a single song is complete nonsense. They literally just handed a #1 to Baauer, and now he's far and ahead of Thrift Shop and the others, all because of some lousy, overdone, 30-second parody videos. But Baauer is a rare thing. Most songs that will be released won't have SO many parody videos. This is a once in a lifetime thing. And, quite frankly, let the man have a hit. He won't have one ever again that's for sure and I can guarantee that radio, as well as this song is selling, will NOT play it. It's simply beyond my understanding that radio could ever even grasp the idea of playing this song. And once the hype is done and the HS videos become stale, the song will disappear and all of us will forget it ever existed. Remember Gangnam Style? Call Me Maybe? Both songs that were heavily parodied and were immensely "memed" by the GP and no one cares about them anymore. Cultural influence my ass. And, ironically enough. what pre-teen girls watch on YT actually is MORE important. It's been scientifically proven that teenage girls, or females in general, are the people buying the most songs on iTunes. They are the most common iTunes buyers. That would explain the digital success of songs like WANEGBT, IKYWT, WMYB, LWWY, Boyfriend, Payphone (those girls love Maroon 5, or Adam Levine ), and to a certain extent Britney, Gaga, Katy, and Rihanna who have quite a strong adolescent female following. Obviously the memes have died since the songs are "old", but both songs will be remembered as being among the biggest hits of our generation. Especially "Call Me Maybe". "Harlem Shake" most likely will not, but it's massive right now, and the Hot 100 is about right now, not 10-15 years from now.
Klou 2,414
Problem I have is the Hot 100 should be based on what song is the most popular... Not what is getting the most attention. There's a difference. There are scenarios when videos get lots of attention because people are curious. It does not mean they like the song.
MANiCURE1295 8,673
ON ANOTHER NOTE: Do you guys think that Lady Gaga's surgery/cancellation of shows result in her lead single getting more attention or less?

Klou 2,414
103 million views goes well beyond the point of curiosity imo. How many times have you watched a video because you were just curious to see what it looked like, but didn't like the song? We all do it. Stay got a lot of buzz because she was naked in a bathtub and it got a lot of those views for the same reason.

Star 4,409
This new rule is mess. Why should care about #1? It's pointless. Longetivity+Sales>>>> Goodbye, Hot100. Welcome, UKTop40

Phlop 4,773
This might help some artists like Lana though, some of you youtube views are high and make the front page of youtube sometimes (the Ride video and National Anthem did). BYE

It's a dance craze that everyone wants to try out and make their own videos for, and even more people who want to watch these videos.
craig 680
I'd like to see a formula where Sales are about 50% and Radio and Streaming (inc. youtube) are each about 25%.
