ryhanna 3,507
She might be big in the US, but only about 5%-10% of her album sales come from outside of it. Gaga in the other hand sells a lot more worldwide. At least that's a fact we can rely on. Taylor is actually #1 all around the world right now, just saying. Nagini 179
Billboard reports: According to industry sources, first-day sales for "Red" (Monday, Oct. 22) surpassed 500,000 units, including a record opening day sum at Target, as the mass-merchant scored exclusive rights to the album's deluxe version which includes three additional songs and three remixes. According to sources, Target shifted more than 160,000 units. Though not confirmed, unit sales at the iTunes Music Store appears to have also been record-setting. The digital retailer reportedly accounted for nearly half of all units sold on "Red's" first day of availability. With that start, "Red" should break the first-week iTunes sales mark, recently set by Mumford & Sons "Babel," which moved roughly 390,000 units just three weeks ago, according to those in the know. craig 680
RED is doing good WW You mean `for a Taylor record.`` She`s have to increase sales by 7x or 8x from Speak Now, just to match BTW first week in the UK.
Tommymonster44 0
A large part of Taylor dominating the Top 20 has to do with iTunes not having the Complete My Album feature for the first 15 hours, which meant people who bought the promo singles either had to buy the whole album, or buy the tracks they didn't have seperately. Which then carried over to the GP seeing the songs in the top and buying the ones they liked, sending them up even higher. So a screw-up (?) by iTunes helped Taylor out yet again (selling WANEGBT early and then still counting it for the record). Congrats to her. I don't like her, but that is absolutely insane. I'm not so convinced that the complete my album flaw was the main factor for her crowding the top 20. If I remember correctly, the same thing happened with Born This Way when it was released. It took iTunes a day before it allowed me to complete the album. Exactly what I said on the last page. Speak Now = Born This Way. By the way, ask someone if he knows MTN and he's probably say yes. Nobody knows this songs under perform (for Gaga standard), and it is quite ridiculous people might think that. Not everybody follow the charts. That's a very good point. There's really not a difference between a top 20 song and a number one song apart from the amount of repetition (in sales and in airplay). Someone that doesn't actually go online with the intention of seeing a song's chart position wouldn't notice that MTN didn't do well. I honestly think that having at least one single under perform per album is completely rational and that many fans overreacted with Gaga. I mean, unless Gaga releases 3-4 singles for ARTPOP then I would expect another song to under perform. Big names like Beyonce, Britney Spears, Madonna (), even Rihanna have singles under perform all the time. I really don't see the big deal. It was bound to happen at some point. Regarding Bryan's post about Taylor having more momentum than Speak Now, I disagree. After SN, Taylor Swift suffered from having a lack of hit singles (the best selling single from SN only went Double Platinum) and in comparison to the Fearless era than it is evident that Taylor experienced a large decline. I mean, she barely had any POP radio support that era. And now look at her! I agree. But I think it had something to do with the fact that Gaga's career had been basically perfect until Marry The Night. She literally had not released a single that hadn't became a hit. I guess it just surprised fans that a Gaga song didn't become a hit because it never happened before. Not to many artists on their third album could say that. Tommymonster44 0
From Hits: Taylor Swift's Red now looks solidly north of 1 million in first-week sales, with a chance to possibly top Lady Gaga's 1.1 million-selling debut for Born This Way in May 2011. But that album, of course, included more than 400k in 99-cent sales from Amazon MP3. How about that, boys and girls?! I am so tired of hearing about that stupid album discount in news stories haha. Record companies do big promotions and discounts all the time. For heaven's sake, Red is being promoted at a pizza shop. At the end of the day, people bought Born This Way because they wanted to buy it. What does it matter if a great deal or a promotion hooked customer's that were previously on-the-line about buying that album? That's called marketing. I can't help if a star's flop album wasn't promoted properly. That's their own fault for not utilizing sales/promotion opportunities. With that in mind, the Amazon discount wasn't even gaga or interscope's decision. It was amazon's.

Tommymonster44 0
Yeah but anyone who hear's about the discount assume it was Gaga's decision. And they don't even bother to research about it Yea, but what does it matter if it was Gaga's decision? Artists are allowed to promote their album. If an album flops because an artist apparently thought they were too high and mighty to discount/promote/repackage, then the album's failure was caused by nobody but themselves. Taylor's album is selling as much as it is because her marketing team is genius. Gaga's has one of the world's best marketing teams, too. Both Gaga and Taylor did a lot of flips and tricks to get that one million debut. There's nothing wrong with discounting/promoting an album to get sales. Artists are allowed to advertise their work. Lyzz the Monster 0
Taylor Swift has huge cross-over appeal and she's America's Sweetheart, I've always known she would slay album sales wise but not this hard Meanwhile Gaga's main audience are mostly pop music fans who don't buy albums so the fact that BTW sold 700K without the Amazon deal was still very impressive, but I don't see her doing it ever again. Lyzz the Monster 0
She`s have new strategies and tricks, don`t worry. Gaga`s team learned from Swift`s promotion of Speak Now (including their Amazon deal), they can learn from this campaign. Actually, I heard that Taylor's team is now trying to avoid that, since Red is NOT available as mp3 format on Amazon. Not sure if it's true though Corrina @cmt : "Red" isn't allowed to be sold on Amazon in (MP3 form only) but is available in album format due to the fact her label does not want a repeat of the shenanigans that happened to Gaga's album They don't want her "Red" compromised to be sold at the fire sale discount of 99c, so if Big Machine were to make it available to them, they could conceivably sell it at that price to garner advertisement and sales. Taylor and her label would still get the full amount of the sale, but Amazon would lose a lot of money in order to bring traffic to their site. Hence, that is the reason why no MP3 format will be brought to Amazon for sales. As far as the streaming of her songs, that is only for a short duration of the 2 weeks that her label will be playing 8 of her songs on the formats of Top 40, Hot AC, AC, and Country. After that point, each song that is released for radio airplay and/or as a official single release, it will be made available for streaming.
