Notice how your initial thought is a poor person gets things “just to show off” and that rent prices are fair. PLEASE. Rent is insane in many parts of the country. You should know as a landlord. And you should tbh. No one disagrees with that. But in the richest nation on Earth, there is NO EXCUSE for anyone to be uneducated, hungry, and/or homeless. Zero. We can afford to feed and house these people, we just don't. Stop looking at it as "the government giving handouts" and start looking at is as society deciding no one is unimportant enough to let slip through the cracks. In these cities where supply and demand are equal, the market will keep rent stabilized. You live in a place that has a high cost of living, you are going to have to have a great job or lots of roommates...or family that you can live with.
