Ingrid Newkirk, 70, who co-founded People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) with fellow activist Alex Pacheco, said calling animals 'pets' is just like calling a woman 'sweetie' or 'honey'. "Animals are not pets - they are not your cheap burglar alarm, or something which allows you to go out for a walk. They are not ours as decorations or toys, they are living beings." PETA has previously called for animals to be seen as equal to humans and said the term 'pet owner' should be changed to 'human carer' or 'guardian' instead. She continued: "A dog is a feeling, whole individual, with emotions and interests, not something you 'have'. "How we say things governs how we think about them, so a tweak in our language when we talk about the animals in our homes is needed. "A pet is a commodity but animals should not be things on shelves or in boxes, where people say, 'I like the look of that one, it matches my curtains or my sense of myself'. No. PC culture is on fire Legit tho up until I was a teenager I loved culture moving towards equality and tolerance on all things But the last several years to me everything is going so extreme and so extra with the sensitivities I'm just stating my opinion btw Edit: at least according to a video it doesn't seem like they wanna ban it per say just discourage its use.... "Take the flower by the thorns" genuinely sounds quite cool and poetic, though. But seriously, PETA gets more ridiculous with time. Pets don't care what you call them, they just want to be kept fed, warm and loved. Plus, they'd never over-analyse us to the same degree. Cats rub against us to rub their scent over us, to claim us as their property. I think they see us as their pets, quite frankly. I don't see PETA up in arms about the way cats disrespect us. I don't like to treat my animals like I own them, I think of it like we just coexist together in the same environment. I don't think it's fair for any species to own another.
