Billie Eilish thinks a lot of hip-hop right now is lying about guns & women

She's not entirely wrong. However, there's a history of hip hop/rap being sh*t on over the  years, and some of the criticism is racist or at best insensitive, so people tend to be sensitive about it. Add to the mix that she's a white teenager making a generalization about a genre which is dominated by Black artists, and I understand the rancor. And no, I don't think her comment is racist—but I do see why people were annoyed.

I do think people on here and IRL tend to ignore the racial dynamics of artists in mostly white, or non  Black genres, criticizing genres that have mostly Black artists. For example, Gaga said something about wanting more variety in genres, and not just trap, on the radio. She's not wrong—even Snoop was b*tching about trap and mumble rap dominating, and music critics have made the same observation. However, the optics of a rich white woman saying this about a Black genre just...don't look great..so there was some blowback. It wasn't quite as bad, though, because she wasn't making a mass generalization and instead stating one type of hip hop

This is a racist stereotype about a music genre that has Black roots.

And when you search for this exact statement, you’ll see a history of White artists saying this about Black music.

It goes all the way back to Jazz. “Those n-words and their over sexual music”

My problem with the her statements is she makes pop music. Her genre is Pop. It’s not Rap or Hip Hop or (“the politically correct way to say the n-word” -Tyler The Creator [because it’s true! Modern day segregation!]) Urban

It’s a genre vs genre battle as old as time. But here, it’s insensitive because Black Creativity is seen as Ghetto until a White artist takes from it.

I mean everything about her music to her looks is stolen from hip hop artists but ok

There was a huge discussion among Black centered threads about her nails are only trendy now but when Black women have them it’s “DMV nails Ghetto Welfare Queen Ratchet”

On top of “it’s okay to make a statement of I’m not attracted to Black People, it’s a preference.”

Wait wut, did she really say the latter? Like is there a legitimate source for that quote?

I gave her the benefit of the doubt earlier—that it was an insensitive remark, but she probably didn't have racist intentions and didn't recognize how it could be read as racist and/or problematic—but if that latter quote is accurate...I shouldn't have given her the benefit of the doubt.

No it was Black Women discussing her nails at the grammys and the head to toe gucci print.

It’s things many Black people have done and racist forums use their family photos to make those racist comments

Like the mainstream media published that it was now a ~hot trend~

See Dapper Dan and how Gucci rectified stealing his imagery.

Like to expand @LilyLark

Counterfeit Fashion has always been a core component of streetwear. Streetwear which is the backbone of Black Fashion. Because streetwear has always been poor communities minority-focused because Elitist fashion would never cater to them.

(See Oprah being denied in Europe from buying a bag. See Black kids manhandled over buying a Ferragamo belt. See Paris is Burning segment about White norms towards Black people, especially Black Queers.)

Dapper Dan was a key figure in that movement. Especially with the NYC underground Balls.

This is what many Black people are talking about with her Grammys look. This is a really really old photo. Like from 2006. It has been passed around on many racists forums and many forums that catered to only Black people. (Yes there was a time before social media where every one self segregated. Idk why it just was. AsianAve and BlackPlanet were noticeable ones)

Notice the watermark.

Black people get made fun of for this for years. Because Black Creativity is seen as a joke until Whites do it. Then it’s suddenly ~hot trend~

I understand the song is mostly satire but it’s alarming that when she was 16 she sang about wanting to get with older men

Right when America was exposing many pedophiles in Hollywood.

Jeffery Epstein and Brian Singer for example.

So the criticism isn’t far off if we’re gonna start the “hip hop glamorizes gun violence and drugs”

Many could say she was glamorizing pedophilia

But I’m actually getting sick of all the negativity black artists get on this site and there’s no denying.

Doesn't GGD bash any artist getting as big or bigger than gaga whatever the race tho?

Back in the days Lana was called overrated by monsters and since she stopped making hits they loved her more. Same with minaj, the monster backlash was worst when she was bigger imo. Madonna and Beyoncé always seems on top so they always got crap here. Grande start taking crap when she arrived on top around thank U next. Gomez also get her fair share of bashing and it intensified when she went bigger a few years ago. Now billie's getting sh*t as well since she exploded some time ago.

Every time there’s a thread about a black artist, majority of the comments that follow are negative

Except for Rihanna. She and Adele are the only one I always saw getting globally loved on GGD.

Maybe we could add Lorde but for her too it clearly went better on GGD when she went more indie and wasn't seen as a big "chart competition" for gaga anymore. If she had many hits à la "royals" I'm sure many folks here would insist on how overrated she is etc. :ladyhaha:

Sis, the backlash from the hip hop community right now is brutal. I almost feel sorry for her, except Billie’s snobbish attitude ain’t new. This was coming, and was only a matter of time.

It ain’t about colour gurl. It’s about class - and lack of class. Read the Twitter comments and tell me if the community is wrong in believing that a privileged person - who has hijacked hip hop slang and aesthetics to become massively successful- should not be throwing stones at that community.

Has Billie ever slandered death metal because they don’t really worship the devil? Has she ever slandered country music because they live in LA not Tennessee?

She deserves everything she gets.

I'm not dissagreeing with you but what did she hijack? When I think of her I think of Ocean Eyes and When the party's over

I've also seen people on here make the same complaint about hip hop a number of times, it's a common complaint so is the issue because she's famous and saying the same?

It’s both. The common complaints on here about Black Music magnify a bigger issue with the anti-blackness of the site’s members.

She’s newly famous so there is a bigger microscope on her.

This statement about Black Music is always gonna rile people up because it is a diverse field of artists that make all kinds of music. It’s generalizing statement and blanket statements will always be frowned upon.

She is also not in that musical genre. Especially her brother.

If she had said the names of the rappers who she didn’t like, this would be a different story.

The "Bruises, on both my knees for you" recorded when she was underage was also disturbing.

Of course teens have sex before being 18 yo but I don't like them telling the world about it lmao. It sexualize folks of their age when many are still FAR to be ready for sex yet.

People gonna associate 16 yo girls with sexuality and then go for girls of this age when many are literally still kids mentally.

Some of her songs have hip hop influences like the end of Bad guy for example.

Her looks ( with the baggy for example ) are also inspired by it here or there.

The thing is that even if there's truth in what she says many negative stuffs are promoted in other genres and get away with it. Many rappers are doing what she describe indeed but many EDM songs are promoting hard drugs usage and the genres often get away with it.

That's why people ask themselves if it's more about falling for a racist trope than genuine concern. They see this critic of hip hop a black genre often coming back while other genre don't get repeated bashing over their flaws.
