Winter heatwave Europe

Europe will bake as a scorching winter heatwave sends the mercury rocketing to way above normal levels for the time of year, according to BBC meteorologist Chris Fawkes. Over the weekend some areas of Spain saw temperatures of up to 27C. Mr Fawkes said he thought Europeans could see similar temperatures as they head into next week.

South-west France enjoyed a partcularly warm Sunday for the winter season: temperatures soared to 26.5°C in Cambo-les-Bains in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department that borders Spain.

The rest of France also enjoyed unusually warm temperatures for winter even though it rained in the northern part of the country. Paris recorded 16°C over the week end.

According to meteorologists, the four days of warm temperatures in France are due to an anti-cyclone which moved from Morocco, towards Spain and then reached France bringing with it exceptionnally warm air.

The foehn effect is the cause for exceptionally warm temperatures in south-west France. This happened when a mass of air travelling from the south crossed the Pyrenees mountain range into France.

The foehn effect describes an air mass stuck between a warm front and a cold front. It is a change from wet and cold conditions one side of a mountain, to warmer and drier conditions on the other side

Meteo France's François Jobbard said that global warming accentuates the phenomena

We had like 17-18c this week in Greece which was awesome! It felt like spring :queenga:

We had 12 degrees in Belgium which is like 6 degrees above the normal. And it didnt even snow this year.... its quite sad. The last time it  snowed a lot is like 2 years ago and that was like for only 2 days. The last time it snowed for more then a week was in 2013

Same thing in France.
When I was a kid we had snow for like a whole month every year, but as years passed we had less and less and less, and last 2 years we had absolutely no snow, only rain. Many days have been feeling like spring. It's scary as hell how fast the climate is changing.

Once again Ireland gets nothing but rain as per usual :emma:

I remember last summer when all of Europe (even the U.K) was like 40+ degrees. However, it was only 15 degrees here that day, and we got a dounpour :poot:

Y'all Europeans (and Brits) should be happy we're basically your bad weather shield.
