Do you understand what death rates are?

The common flu kills around 0.13% of people who get it.

This virus has killed 2-3% of people who are infected AS OF NOW. Meaning, this number could easily rise.

And there is NO VACCINE and no real way to prevent it.

So yes, the flu kills many more a year but it’s not as deadly as this virus as of now.

That is why it’s a big deal. If we don’t take measures and millions become infected, MILLIONS will die as a result of this virus.

Look at the 1918 flu pandemic. It had a 10-20% death rate and around 50-100M people died.

I understand your point. But 2-3% is still little for a hysteria this big to be happening. Didn't Ebola have death rate of 75% or something? And you can't get any vaccines for that too.

I'm just saying that this whole disease is currently ''it'' thing for the media to write about.  In couple of months everyone will forget about this, just like how they did with Ebola.

I saw something the other day where scientists ran a simulation if the virus went untreated. Projected 65 million people could die from the infection.

Similar thing could happen with any ''rare'' disease. :fail:

I literally don't understand the hysteria behind this whole desease. It's literally like influenza, but the difference is that far less people die because of it :fail:

Hundreds have died since the outbreak in December 2019, more than 8000 are infected.

Oh I wasn’t debating or disagreeing with anyone. Just sharing what I saw.

130 something was last confirmed figure if I remember reading right. Any source there are more than 200 deaths confirmed?

Ebola has a 90% death rate. But it is NOT airborne. Therefore, infection is a bit more difficult and was easier to contain.

I sure hope we forget about it - because we were able to contain it.

For context, SARS infected 8K in 2003,  this virus has already passed that number.

People are literally dying over this virus are you serious

More people have died from influenza over the past week than this virus.

it’s literally mimicking influenza, and only killing people who are old with serious pre-existing conditions.

the media is just capitalizing on the fear tactic as a means to get money from more clicks

Mister G

I think overall the moral of the story here is, please mindful of hygiene and sanitation. Wash your hands thoroughly, make sure you stay away from large crowds if you’re sick, and if you feel ill go see a doctor.

Omg I sound like the mom of the group. And whatever they tell you, tequila does not cure everything.

Wikipedia with its references cite 171, that's in China. I mean Close to 200 deaths because of one disease ever since last December, which is not that long ago, is pretty terrifying.

It's the contagiousness of it that makes it even more dangerous.

Diseases such as norovirus, who also spread very easily and have no vaccines, kill roughly about 16 700 people each month.

But I do see your point.

Key word: far less.

A regular flu or influenza alone kills tens of thousands of people each year and nobody freaks out about that. So why are we freaking out about a disease thats killing people with already weak immune system, like million other diseases?

well i read that the danger of the disease spreading is that because it is so new, it can mutate to become something much worse (or something less worse) than it is right now. and  the more people who have it, i'm guessing the more chances of a mutation occurring.

and ps and on a more aggressive note, i'm tired of people saying "oh it's only killing people with weak immune systems." like, do you not have grandparents, why would you say something like that. so it's okay and we shouldn't freak out for there to be the flu AND corona virus running rampant everywhere killing children and elderly people. like.... what????
