A close contact of one of the patients in the U.S. with coronavirus has been infected with the illness, the first evidence that the new virus has spread person-to-person in this country, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Thursday.

The new patient lives with a Chicago woman in her 60s who was diagnosed after returning last month from Wuhan, China, the epicenter of the outbreak that's now sickened upward of 8,000 people.

Six people have now been diagnosed with the new coronavirus in the U.S., two each in Illinois and California, and one each in Arizona and Washington state.

I literally don't understand the hysteria behind this whole desease. It's literally like influenza, but the difference is that far less people die because of it :fail:

You do know that the Coronavirus is a lot older than the one going around right now, don't you? This virus right now is just one out of many mutations. SARS is also a Coronavirus. It's pretty stupid to say that this is the first time the Coronavirus has spread to the US.

Did you see the situation in China? People literally are obligated to stay at home in some cities. I agree that outside China people are becoming too much paranoid but this is serious, we can't let a mortal virus spread all over the world like that.

Key word: far less.

A regular flu or influenza alone kills tens of thousands of people each year and nobody freaks out about that. So why are we freaking out about a disease thats killing people with already weak immune system, like million other diseases?

I agree that in China it's getting out of hand, but I'm sick of the whole media portraying this as another Ebola or smallpox.
We've had similar epidemics in the last couple decades such as swine flu in 2009.

You can go right now and get a flu shot.

There are no vaccines for coronaviruses, and this is actually more contagious than influenza.

We could say that influenza is “controlled”. 2009 happened.

I think the media is pretty chill about it. Most say average people shouldn’t worry lol

Far less people die because an outbreak is now just unfolding. It is more dangerous because there is a longer period of time before you start showing symptoms which will make it harder to contain.

Do you understand what death rates are?

The common flu kills around 0.13% of people who get it.

This virus has killed 2-3% of people who are infected AS OF NOW. Meaning, this number could easily rise.

And there is NO VACCINE and no real way to prevent it.

So yes, the flu kills many more a year but it’s not as deadly as this virus as of now.

That is why it’s a big deal. If we don’t take measures and millions become infected, MILLIONS will die as a result of this virus.

Look at the 1918 flu pandemic. It had a 10-20% death rate and around 50-100M people died.

I saw something the other day where scientists ran a simulation if the virus went untreated. Projected 65 million people could die from the infection.
