Quebec's "values test" for immigrants now in effect

Honest people would be weeded out on a test like this. And I consider honesty a good quality

In most cases it won't actually have much effect anyway one would think. Ppl can just lie

What this test encourages ppl to do is to shut up about their beliefs and lie. Anyone that's actually honest about it may not get in

Also unless u can screen out hateful people (extreme example: gays should go to jail or be out to death) this only takes away ppls right to have their own beliefs

Canada has largely embraced diversity and different ways of thinking and most ppl are respectful of it. Conservative immigrants here do not cause half the problems conservatives whites do tbh anyway

Again Quebec's policies continue to make them drag behind Canada and as a result require continued financial life support for the Province to be sustained

That track record alone should tell u something about Quebec policies tbh

I can’t imagine being this dry and boring.

Alberta would be the most comperable to US south TBH. It's by far our most conservative Province especially when it comes to economy and environment (the Conservative party there won 40 years in a row) :air:

But in terms of immigration specifically Quebec is definitely the most conservative

I suppose, but Calgary is still an awesome city. Speaking from personal experience and what my vast extended family, all punjabi Sikhs, has experienced in all four of these provinces, Quebec is BY far the most intolerant province in Canada. The secularism law that is blatant Islamophobia and anti-Sikh is one thing, but so is the blatant racism from some of the residents there. That being said, Manitoba ain't too hot either based off my experience.

This kind of invalidated everything you wrote :poot:

I've only ever been to Calgary, Edmonton, Jasper and Banff so I guess my experience is a little colored by that. Still enjoyed it more than my trip to Quebec City that's for sure

sounds like a totally fine test to me.

it's not like they expect every immigrant to have full knowledge of ochem 1+2 or so. Just fundamental knowledge. After a two year period being in Quebec one can expect you to have that basic knowledge. As an immigrant... even if you don't agree with certain things you could just lie and answer what they want to hear

In terms of ppl ecceptance I agree Quebec is the worst.

It should be noted that socially and politically Montreal and it's metro area is a bit more aligned with the rest of Canada and more open to diversity...

Their culture protectionism seems to stem more from the rest of the province

OMG my city Brampton is predominantly Indian and Punjabi is a big portion of them

The leader of the NDP Jagmeet Sing is Indian and from my city Brampton

Other celebrities from Brampton like Russel petters and Aleesia Cara are Indian

True Montreal is really fun and super pretty. Also, I'm literally in Brampton every other year :huntyga: to visit family. Love Jagmeet Singh :legend:If only we could have someone like him in the US

Personally I think it's a good thing. We've been very permissive and accommodating so far, but when you move to a new country, you learn the country's culture and values. Why should it be any different in Quebec? If this test helps keep homophobic, misogynistic, extremist immigrants from living here, then I'm all for it.

He was on tv today answering questions on the news and like all politicians he dodges questions he doesn't wanna answer and presents the facts in a slightly biased way to make his parties stance seem better while making the other 2 main parties (Liberals and Conservatives) seem like the bad guys :triggered:

I won't hold it against him tho cuz like every party and politician does that... And here in Canada it's not really an opinion cuz the parties select their leaders (we don't pick candidates to lead) and the leader will be pressured by their party to play those games whether they like it or not or they could select a new leader so :huntyga:

He does seem like a nice guy tho.

As for Montreal I agree I've been there multiple times and it's a nice party city with a fun night life (more than Toronto even I would say)

The French resentment you can feel in Quebec about ppl not wanting to speak English to you or being rude, I never experienced that in Montreal, only in other areas of Quebec

It could be cause they are a larger more diverse city and also because they are close to Ontario English Canadians pop by all the time...

Whatever the reason that protectionism social Conservatism from Quebec as a general rule doesn't really apply to Montreal I find

Montreal also has a very low seperatism support rate. In Quebec as a whole it's been as high as 49% while in Montreal polls usually show less than 1/3 feel that way a considerable gap compared to the rest of Quebec

Meh. I support the idea but not how it is implemented.
Everyone knows what the right answers are. I think it would be better if they had interviews or maybe essay questions, so that the extreme ones can get out.

I can see why/how it would be controversial but I think the questions are easy/simple enough... very easy to lie if you know what Canada's overall morals are

will include questions about secularism, same-sex marriage, gender rights, religious symbols and other aspects of Quebec culture

Religious symbols? what does that mean?

And anyone could easily cheat the test and say they support it

In Quebec it's against the law for public sector workers to wear anything of a religious nature

I don't know if it could be refering to that

For example, a judge, a police officer, a teacher, can't wear something religious while working (a cross, a kippa, a veil, a burqua, etc.). They have to remove it while at work.

As long as people aren't hateful or problematic I believe ppl should have the right to have their own values and beliefs

There's a difference between values and just being a very disgusting person

I always find it funny when the Canadians wonder why Québec never follows the other provinces when said-provinces never cared enough to even sign THE CONSTITUTION with Québec officials :rip:
