#10: Starting Over Again (1980)

       00-social-dolly-parton.jpg&f=1&nofb=1

Average Score: 8.41

High Score: 11 @Blue Madonna @KatieJudasGaga4

Low Score: 5.5 @Glamourpuss

Comments:

@Lois Griffin ~ “I've never heard this song before this megarate and the Humpty Dumpty reference is giving me flashbacks to the song The Archer on Taylor Swift's new album, which uses the same reference, but unfortunately I don't really like that song.  This isn't one of my favorites on this list, but I do think that this song could be very poignant for someone with the requisite life experience.”

Chart Information:

U.S. Billboard Hot Country Singles: #1 (14 Weeks on Chart)

U.S. Billboard Hot 100: #36 (10 Weeks on Chart)

U.S. Adult Contemporary: #35 (7 Weeks on Chart)

Canadian RPM Country Tracks: #2

Song Information:

Starting out the 1980’s with another Top 40 pop hit, Parton recorded “Starting Over Again” which was co-written by the amazing Donna Summer. A song about a divorce occurring during middle age, the track, its success on pop radio surprised RCA given the subject matter. “Dolly, Dolly, Dolly” (the album which it is on) charted at #1, #7 (30 weeks), and #71 (13 Weeks) on the Canadian RPM Country Chart, U.S. Billboard Top Country Albums, and Billboard 200 charts respectively. While the album spawned two #1 singles (including “Old Flames Can’t Hold A Candle To You”) the era was largely overshadowed by the 9 to 5 phenomena (both movie and album) that occurred during the same year.

Other Nominations (N) and Wins (W) Associated With The “Dolly, Dolly, Dolly” Era:

Academy of Country Music Award (1980) – Top Female Vocalist (W)

#9: But You Know That I Love You (1980)

   6da3339c8c1024b8268dd1d09db006b3.jpg&f=1

Average Score: 8.42

High Score: 10 @rumours @Animal Claws

Low Score: 6.5 @Oriane

Comments:

@Lois Griffin ~ “A shockingly pragmatic song. It fits so perfectly on 9 to 5 and Odd Jobs. This song has a voice and a truth that most songs on the radio today simply can't hold a candle to (pun intended). I had to stop listening to the playlist and listen to some songs from 9 to 5 and Odd Jobs while writing this.”

Chart Information:

U.S. Hot Country Songs: #1 (17 Weeks on Chart)

U.S. Billboard Hot 100: #41 (10 Weeks on Chart)

U.S. Adult Contemporary: #14 (10 Weeks on Chart)

Canadian RPM Country Tracks: #2

Song Information:

Released as the second single from “9 to 5 and Odd Jobs”, “But You Know That I Love” is actually a cover of a “First Edition” song (a band which future duet partner Kenny Rogers was in). Following the theme of the concept album, the track focuses on a relationship which is broken apart due to socioeconomic circumstances. The album – “9 to 5 and Odd Jobs” – peaked at #11 on the Billboard 200 (34 Weeks) and #1 on the Country Album Charts (49 Weeks) during 1980-1981.

The only thing I know for sure is that Jolene will be #1. Everything before that is a wild card.

I'm pleasantly surprised to see this song go this far. This has been the song that I've been listening to since I finished the megarate. I find the lyrics of this song to be so striking because I think that they an opinion or a reality that most love songs on the radio would deny.

I hope not tbh:laughga: It's an iconic song (and I gave it a 9), but there were songs that were definitely better imo. But I think it will be #1 considering everyone knows and loves it. 9 to 5 and I Will Always Love You are also likely to win.

I'm going to be the most hated person on the planet.  What was I thinking.  I love the song.

I live outside the space time continuum.
