Why wouldn’t someone want their “stripped back” country-influenced album to be analog though? :messga: and let’s be honest, if Joanne was more acoustic and sounded like it came out of the 70s that would make it less pop...

Again, the song structure already followed the typical pop format prior to BloodPop's inclusion. Regardless of synthesizers or electronic risers, the record was already conceived with a pop-state of mind lyrically and structurally. Had he not been added to the record, the album would have still been pop but even more divisive in the fan base and critics imo.

Anyways, is there an inherent issue you have with pop music out of curiosity? You talk about pop as as if it leaves a bad taste in your mouth?

This is probably a stupid question, but is there a reason that bigger, more mainstream/pop artists stay with big labels? Within the EDM world at least, there seems to be a lot of artists now releasing music independently or on smaller artist-run labels, which gives them more artistic freedom and control

reality’s tight if the music is right

No, without her infectious choruses, familiar structure and buildups to explosive bridges, little production tricks and euphoric, genius chord inversions (all the secrets of earworm pop) I wouldn't find her music so obsession worthy! I think Gaga strikes a great balance of pop and doing whatever the eff she wants. She wears her influences on her sleeve but has never gotten so indulgent in them the music lost its appeal

If she did a completely non pop project, I would want it to be band-backed jazzy jams that are way too long and contain a lot of improvising. Like SOFU but 12 minutes long, syncopated, with a high-heel-on-the-guitar solo and a slew of insanely good musicians featured alongside :laughga:

Yes, I want to see more experimentation in her work. Sometimes I’m listening to her albums and I wish she had some real like rock r n b songs. That would be amazing.

I think POP music in general needs big releases and lots of promo to reach the wider audiences, mainly the GP. Big labels give them the budget to do that but it also means less control of your art in some ways. That's why it's pop music because you have to sound a certain way to easily engage with the GP.

I'm sure most artists prefer to sign with a big label. But not everyone is chosen or being recognized by these labels. This is why indie (independent) artists only have a smaller audience compared to Gaga, Madonna, Taylor etc. But they have more control so their music sounds a lot more different than whatever is put out in mainstream pop music.

They probably want the project budget that only a large label can offer!  Otherwise a pop star would basically be paying for all of the extra pop sh*t herself... and when Gaga did that for TMB, her bank account went in the red! :omg: Gotta get that capital for the big projjies :pole:

Well for starters I’m not sure why you’re talking about a format or structure. VCVCBC exists in virtually all genres. Clearly there’s some type of definition issue we have here.

also, I love pop music. I have no problem with a clean modern sound with tame vocals when it comes from artists and projects that have that to offer. I mean, I can enjoy The Cure, TF, etc. because these are songs and projects that were made to be pop. But especially with her past 2 solo albums, there’s an obvious difference between what she promotes and what she’s giving us sonically. And it’s clear Gaga didn't overstated herself when she teased she wanted ARTPOP to be “experimental” based off most of the demos and stems from the album, or when she said she wanted Joanne to be stripped back and to her roots (I mean, compare Angel Down’s worktape to the studio version).

I also don’t know why some of you guys like to think she’s extremely free and in control with her music and brand when it’s very obvious she’s been restricted from releasing music that can’t be easily manipulated into commercial songs like Princess Die and SOFY. The only way we seem to get her away from being a typical pop artist with officially released music is when she’s featured on a collaborative project (song or album).
