I believe it's because of the magnitude of trauma and the PTSD. I think once she was able to remember those dark times, they were really haunting her. And you can see that in her songs (Alejandro, Monster, Bad romance, Teeth, Swine etc) and her obsession with psychological horror movies that revolve around sex and crime.
