Stop saying Biden is the 'most electable'. Trump will run rings round him

..he can beat Donald Trump.

It is a myth just as it was a myth that Hillary Clinton was a good candidate against Trump. Biden is not, in fact, the pragmatic choice. He would not beat Trump. He would lose.

Last time round, Clinton supporters lived in a strange kind of denial. Anyone could see she had unique vulnerabilities Trump could exploit. Clinton’s attempts to attack Trump as an out-of-touch, reckless billionaire sex criminal would fail, because Trump would point out that she herself was out of touch, bought by billionaires and had an unrepentant alleged sex criminal as her husband and chief campaign surrogate.

Joe Biden will face many of the same problems. He has been in Washington since the age of 30, representing Delaware, the “capital of corporate America”. He is infamous for his connections to the credit card industry, and he has lied about his degree of support for the Iraq war. Even Matthew Yglesias of Vox calls Biden the “Hillary Clinton of 2020” for his corporate ties and war support.

Left-leaning journalists and pundits love to “fact-check” Trump, as if proving that he has lied is in itself persuasive. But 2016 should have showed us how powerless “debunking” is next to “optics”. If you have a Democratic candidate who looks really corrupt, it doesn’t matter if they’re not. People don’t trust the press and they don’t trust politicians.

At the same time, compared to Trump, Biden has:

No money

No voter enthusiasm

No organization

No agenda

No real argument for himself

Ask yourself: how likely is such a candidate to win? Is such a person really the one you want to run against Trump?

People’s already limited enthusiasm for Biden will further wane, and Trump will point to his “strong economy” and “job creation” as evidence Obama and Biden were weak failures. Biden will look tired and irrelevant, and possibly forget why he is even running in the first place. Trump will be re-elected comfortably.

No lies told tbh. People need to wake tf up and realize how much of a mistake it will be for Biden to be the candidate.

The same arguments for why Biden is so electable were the ones being used for why Hillary would win, and how did that turn out??

Due to optics and his long history in establishment politics, people will not trust Biden and believe him to be corrupt, especially with everything in the Ukraine scandal about his son. People thought the same thing about Hillary because of her emails, Wall St speeches, etc.

WAKE UP or you're gonna help the Dems to lose again in 2020 and re-elect the Criminal in Chief.

REALITY

This is what I've been saying. If Biden gets the nomination, we're screwed. This will be a play-by-play of what happened in 2016, and it seems like no one's really paying attention to that, which is the most frustrating thing of all.

Sure, you could argue that Biden is overall less hated than Hillary (with her email scandal, Benghazi, Bill Clinton's scandals, etc.), but Biden's still that same corporate/moderate/centrist Democratic politician that doesn't energize either the Democratic party, or Independents, or even moderate Republicans enough to win the 2016 election. Not to mention, Trump would annihilate  him in the debates. If Biden can't manage to get through primary debates without getting flustered or mumbling his way through his talking points, he sure as hell can't do that with Trump.

We need a voice in the party who talks about real, substantial change and has an equally as excited voter base. Sanders, at this point, is really the only candidate that has that.

I think the reality is that Biden is the most electable in ideology within the primary electorate. In other words, more people who are likely to vote in the primary agree with Biden on policy; however, nobody is excited to vote for Joe Biden. The result is  you have a candidate who has the biggest chance of winning the primary and going on to lose the general election because he is unable to excite enough people to go out and vote for him. We saw the very same thing play out when the democratic primary electorate voted for Hillary Clinton as the nominee.

Bernie is the inverse. Bernie is the next strongest democrat in terms of electability against Trump. Generally speaking, it is only a 1-3% difference between Bernie and Biden. However, what you exchange that for is energy and excitement. Every poll shows that Bernie has the most enthusiastic and committed voters. This means that while Bernie isn't the most likely person to win the primary electorate, he is the one most likely to win the general election.

This is the argument for Bernie Sanders for president and the reason we should not elect Joe Biden.

I do want to push back a little bit.

1. Every Medicare for All proposal does not eliminate private insurance. Even under Bernie's plan, you can get private insurance for supplemental coverage. What that means is that the medicare for all bill bans duplicate coverage. In other words, if medicare for all does not cover it, you can get purchase private insurance for that. This is generally assumed to be cosmetic surgery and supplemental services of the like.

2. What voters do you think this is going to put off? Generally speaking, overwhelming majority of democrats and independents support medicare for all and about a third of republicans. This is provided the question is framed to actually say what medicare for all is. When the question is framed as if private insurance is being taken away with no mention of what is replacing it, support for it generally goes down. So, I would argue that the voters that would be put off by medicare for all will be the voters who will believe the TV ads that dishonestly tell voters that medicare for all costs more money than the current system, that the govt is going to take away your insurance and replace it with an alternative that will result in increased taxes.

The reality is that nobody can dispute the fact that americans pay nearly twice as much per capita than any other country for healthcare for often times worse health outcomes. The only way forward to reduce that cost and to improve health outcomes and life expectancy is to bring everybody into the same risk pool, eliminating the profit motive by the insurance and drug companies and replace the private taxes of premiums, copayments, deductibles and out of pocket expenses by increased public taxes that are less than the sum of the private taxes. This will mean that generally speaking there will be some people who will pay more in healthcare than they actually utilize and there will be others who receive services worth greater than they contribute; however, that is the way insurance works. Nobody complains about the fact they pay hundreds of dollars every month in car insurance when they don't get in wrecks  or have reasons to file claims for years and years and years. It's the same principle except instead of insuring your car, we're insuring the totality of the country.

To be fair Hilary did win the popular vote by a fair margin

Trump got lucky that he won many swing states by just enough razor thin votes to win the electorials

Also historically it's not uncommon after a 2 term presidency for the votes to elect the opposite party president the following time

I think ppl over criticize Hilary and make her sound less electable than she was and make it sound like that's proof that a Centrist is bad for votes but what happened is pretty historical after 8 years of a party rulling

That being said I do agree Biden is rather... Dry and boring tbh. Candidates like Warren or Bernie would almost for sure increase voter turnout

Let me guess. It is this the same writer as the one who wrote that centrists democrats need a reality check? :huntyga:

Even if he isnt, he needs a reality check. No matter who will be the democratic candidate, Trump and republicans will go as lower as they need to try to win this.

Not many are really saying that here...maybe a couple of people support him here??

The voters will decide who they want as a nominee.

Trump will attack anyone with lies and illogical nonsense. No one is going to be immune from his attacks and the crazy **** he makes up twenty four hours a day.

You make some fair points.

Not to mention, the announcement by the FBI of re-opening their investigation into her use of a private email server just days before the election didn't help either.

Though I suppose that only adds weight to the corruption argument the article made, where even if said candidate isn't corrupt/crooked, they have the appearance that they are and those kind of optics in such a tight race are not helpful.

It was just the title of the article. I think it's more of a response to the cable news industry and corporate media who keep pushing the narrative that he's the most electable Democrat.

I agree with most of what you're saying though.

Yang is the most electable, if you looks at any video, even the conservative and Fox News videos about him, republicans praise him and say they’d switch if he’s the primary democratic candidate, don’t believe me, just go to any video.

Wt heck is saying that?  I can't stand Biden. LITERALLY any of the leading democratic nominees (Bernie, Amy, Pete, Elizabeth) are better choices to defeat Trump. :queenga:

Mister G

All I’mma say...if Biden gets the nomination to go against Trump in the general election, the Democrats may as well pretend it’s 2016 all over again. Biden is not the right person for the job. Preferably I want Bernie, but if he got shafted I’d rather take my chances with Warren or Pete or Yang or anyone else that isn’t Biden.
