This study is much more than pride events though. It's also about laws against criminalization of violence, protection against discrimination, workers protections etc. The list shows what Germany lacks.

I'm not surprised Canada is #2 but I seriously doubt we are even in the top 10 in terms of support... I wouldn't be surprised if more ppl in Netherlands are supportive

 

We have a very high percentage of immigrants and many come from Countries of conservative values and I know even where I work (some 50 employees) most are immigrants and almost every single one of them is anti-LGBT

 

But Canada has a very mind your own business culture for some reason... Races here and different backgrounds and even just conservatives and liberals in general don't butt heads in the same kind of way Americans do

 

Here people aren't vocal about that stuff. You can see it in some people's faces when they don't approve of a same sex couple walking by but they literally will never do or say anything because they know that in Canada it's expected that you respect their rights even if you don't agree

 

im generalizing. I'm not saying LGBT never ever encounter issues. Even tho I've never seen violence in my life against a homosexual I've certainly heard slurs on occasion like ****t especially during school years tho I haven't heard anyone say it since I graduated years ago

 

I think Canada ranks high in safety because of our mind your own business culture not because we're the highest supporters

Not necessarily but they were the first country that legalized gay marriage and I think it definitely has to mean something. Also they as a country are really gay friendly and I even heard they have this policy for gay couples that are getting married where they get some money to start their life together and are also pretty generous to gay immigrants that decide to live and marry there.

True but a lot can influence this... Depends what political parties are in power at the time for example...

 

Canada was not the first Nation to legalize it but we did do it Nationally in 2005 and in some Provinces in 2003 so we were still among the very first... But again are we the biggest supporters in the general population compared to some more humongous Nations in Europe I genuinely don't think so

 

We happened to have liberals in power at the time and our laws have always been strong on anti discrimination and charter of Rights and freedoms highly valued so as a law it was passed

 

But socially there's plenty of non supporters here but they just aren't as vocal as say US Christians and therefore have less influence in laws and politics (and safety as this thread is about)

 

So a Countries laws and societies views don't necessarily have to be the same

 

In Portugal where I used to live there's sooooooo many people against especially older generation or in rural areas yet in terms of politics the Country still has pretty good LGBT rights. It legalized same sex marriage years before the US for example 

 

And money for same sex couples? What is the reasoning behind that?

France doesn't belong in this top 10. These past 5 years, after the same-sex marriage law was adopted, violences against LGBTQI+ people actually rose here, especially towards transgender people. Plus, the debates bills regarding AMP, AMG and trans rights really struggle to get support. 

I myself got verbally assaulted several times this year and once physically. Except from very touristic areas, I've never felt safe showing affection for partners of the same gender/sex in public spaces (I do it anyway though, hence the attacks). 

Next year, we're having municipal elections in France. Many candidates from the gouvernment party have homo/transphobic affiliations and are currently campaigning for major cities. Living in one of those, I'm really concerned by the possible consequences. As an exemple, the local LGBTQ film festival is now cancelled due to political grants cuts. 

From an outside perspective of course France looks progressive on the topic, but from the inside it seems we are going backwards. The little annoying things are compounding and the community is seriously worrying right now. Not the worst country to travel to, but not deserving of a top 10 placement either. Take those lists with a grain of salt.
