Some highlights for context:

So, when a clip surfaced of Buttigieg explaining why negro kids fail at school so often, his answer made perfect sense.

“Kids need to see evidence that education is going to work for them,” Buttigieg explained whitely, when he was running for mayor in 2011. You’re motivated because you believe that at the end of your education, there is a reward; there’s a stable life; there’s a job. And there are a lot of kids—especially [in] the lower-income, minority neighborhoods, who literally just haven’t seen it work. There isn’t someone who they know personally who testifies to the value of education.”

 

Majority-minority schools receive $23 billion less in funding than majority-white schools, according to a recent study by EdBuild. Black students in Indiana, the state where Buttigieg serves as mayor, and across the country, are disciplined more harshly than white students. But even though Buttigieg has never attended a school with more than 10 percent black students, he thinks he knows what’s stopping black kids from achieving their educational dreams.

Apparently, it’s not the fact that the unemployment rate for black college graduates is twice as high as the unemployment rate for white grads. Black college graduates are paid 80 cents for every dollar a white person with the same education earns. White people leave college with lower debt and higher earnings. White kids get more resources, more advanced classes and have access to more technology. But Pete says it could all be solved with a vision-board.

Mayor Pete’s bullshittery is not just wrong, it is proof.

It proves men like him are more willing to perpetuate the fantastic narrative of negro neighborhoods needing more role models and briefcase-carriers than make the people in power stare into the sun and see the blinding light of racism. Get-along moderates would rather make **** up out of whole cloth than wade into the waters of reality. Pete Buttigieg doesn’t want to change anything. He just wants to be something.

This is not just a lie of omission, it is a dangerous precedent. This is why institutional inequality persists. Not because of white hoods and racial slurs. It is because this insidious double-talk erases the problem by camouflaging it. Because it is painted as a problem of black lethargy and not white apathy. Pete Buttigieg is standing over a dying man, holding the oxygen machine in his hand and telling everyone:

“Nah, he doesn’t need CPR. He’s just holding his breath.”

Negligent homicide is still homicide.

His words are being twisted here so that he can be painted as the second coming of Satan.

He is saying that kids from poorer backgrounds are not motivated to pursue education because there are systemic barriers in place that prevent them from succeeding. No one (or at least very few) from their community has been able to overcome the barriers and achieve the reward of education, hence no one to bring these benefits back to their community. 

Nowhere did he say that poor people and minorities are "lazy" or "lethargic."

That is exactly what the author is objecting to. The root of the inequities in the American education system isn't that black Americans and other communities of color don't have role models to look up to. Buttigieg parroted classic right-wing rhetoric. "Poor black kids don't succeed because they don't have role models to emulate." It's a repackaged "Where are the fathers?" talking point, and it elides the real issue: the systemic lack of resources in poor, black areas that are deliberately being left behind by the political establishment. The author, and the numerous other black writers that have repeatedly criticized Buttigieg for his record and his rhetoric pertaining to black voters, has every right to object to the rhetoric he used here.

I feel like it's a poor choice of words that makes something kind of bad and wrong into something extremely bad. I mean if you assume he's saying that there's systemic racism so kids see that education of their parents didn't work...the implication is they have no motivation to try or are lazier than their peers which I don't think is a thing? And that's the nicest way to read this.

for the record, though, culture matters, and the black community is a toxic hot mess of self-destructive survival behaviors learned in the wake of 300 years of destruction at the hands of whites. We all know this is true, the recent trend of pretending it isn’t in an effort to appear woke and pious is both insidious and damaging. 
 

Both sides need to wake up. Ya know who kills all those trans women of color? Straight black men. you know why black men encounter the police more often? Because between 1990 and 2018, black men committed fully 52% of homicides in this country, despite being like 8% of the population overall. Yes, you read that right, look it up. DOJ statistics. It’s a complex world out there folks.

If we were to take these comments in isolation, we could simply acknowledge it, say that it was an ignorant thing to say and move on. The problem is, this is a small part of a much larger problem with Buttigieg's relationship with black people, both in South Bend and all across the country. 

Firing his town's black police chief at the behest of donors after he recorded white officers spouting white supremacist rhetoric (https://theintercept.com/2019/09/20/pete-buttigieg-south-bend-police/), bungling the response to a police shooting in South Bend, gentrifying large portions of majority-black neighborhoods, and that recent disaster where his campaign lied and claimed that black politicians in South Carolina had endorsed him when they hadn't.

If it had been one problem, we could address it and move on. We can't, though, because these scandals keep happening. You can't just dismiss all of this because you like the guy.

If the ppl u know that get an education don't get payed fairly or sometimes don't find work in their field at all... U could be tempted to think why bother with extra education at all?

 

If even some whites are starting to loose faith and enthusiasm in the ever diminishing rewards of post secondary in today's horrible economy.... Imagine minorities that are even more affected

As someone who is not a supporter of Buttigieg but has been watching (and at times working in) politics for over a decade, I can tell you this - there is definitely a concerted effort to suppress Buttigieg's rise in the primary. I can't tell you who's orchestrating it, but it's coordinated. We would not otherwise be getting this constant onslaught of little soundbites and photos that counter the narrative his campaign is trying to craft for him. I think in the next several months we will learn more about whose undertaking this is. But it reminds me precisely of when the Obama campaign in 2007-2008 coordinated with LGBT influencers like AmericaBlog to get them to publish anti-Clinton information during the Dem primary so that LGBT people wouldn't vote for her.
