The Democrat running is also the son of the last governor who is a Democrat who was governor from 2007-2015. Don’t get too excited about Dems sweeping elections everywhere in 2020. Yes - still, he had a Trump endorsement and rally support from literally yesterday. Credit's due where credit's due. We all thought Trump had pushed the Midwest further to the right but looks like that may not be entirely true. And defeating an incumbent is an even bigger feat. Yes, by no means am I saying this isn’t amazing. But we need to celebrate with caution. Don’t get too confident. (As of right now there is only a 6k difference in votes) You also need to look at other GOP candidates across the state which are doing much better. The problem here was clearly the governor. He was pro-life, socially conservative, all of those things. And it's only densely populated counties that voted for the Democrat. Most counties (since they're sparsely populated) actually voted for the incumbent. And even if the issue was Medicaid, that raises an interesting dilemma for Republicans. Their platform has been to consistently gut state-provided healthcare. Their voters aren't having it anymore.
