A $20.6 Billion Oil Sands Project that is predicted to be fully approved by February that would yield 260,000 barrels a day for next several decades was acknowledged to pose significant environmental risks in the region it would take place but was still considered “in the National Interest” by the quote:

”In July, a federal-provincial panel ruled that the project near Wood Buffalo National Park was in the public interest, even though it could significantly harm the environment and Indigenous people.”

Canadas Oil Sands are deep, large and hold very large reserves (3rd biggest reserves in the world) and each field takes very long to depleate, in some cases up to 50 years

Even if the Government bans all new projects starting now, due to Oil Sands long project cycles, the industry would not fully shut down until 2070 or so.

Canada remains the 4th largest Oil producer after USA, Saudi Arabia and Russia

Watch out for the Russian government as it is very likely to introduce a bill into its Parliament (kinda Parliament) that will give $30 bln. in tax breaks to the oil companies that will start drilling the Antarctic in the nearest 5 years :selena:

Ain't optimistic about the ecological side of their projects either

Trudeau supports the oil industry as long as its regulated to minimize emmisions and overall ecological impact as much as possible

but his regulations slow development and pipelines which is what people in Alberta dont like

The Conservatives are more agressive on growth for the energy sector so they favour them

Looks like canada isn’t the progressive utopia people make it out to be

I mean if were gonna be honest, out of all the major oil producers in the world Canada still has the strictest environmental laws for the energy industry including compared to the US...

Compared to USA, Saudi Arabia, Russia, Venezuela etc Canada is like the only Country that makes its companies spend a fortune reclaiming land, waste disposals, and has applied a carbon tax to encourage reduction in emmissions and we also created an emissions cap of 100 Million tones meaning once it hits the cap it will be illegal to approve any new projects until emissions falls back below the cap

Compared to other energy Super Power at least, I think Canada is still the environmental stand out even if its still not doing enough

Do you think one way to regain any support from Albertans is by developing Alberta and the neighboring northern states more so that they don't rely so heavily on the oil industry for their living?

I dunno. They amount of money theyve made from the oil industry isnt really replaceable by other development. Thats why they were the richest part of Canada

”Western Alieanation” in Canada is a discussed topic now. They felt they payed a lot in taxes and payed into the “Provincial Equalization Program” (mostly payed for by oil money) and Provinces that that had no objections to receiving money from it are against the Oil Industry in Alberta and Pipelines

They are especially upset at Quebec who killed the Energy East Pipeline and strongly oppose pipelines and is by far the largest monetary receiver from the program. They call it a dirty industry but then dont consider it dirty money

i think Oil has to start getting phased out but that the same time i get Albertas and Saskatchewans frustration. If i was Albertan i might feel the rest of Canada might be conviniently hypocritical collecting financial resources from the Province but then showing no support for their economy

if were gonna attack their biggest industry we really should at least be showing them support which were not so i cant fully blame them for being upset the last few years
