The 76th edition of the Venice Film Festival closed Saturday night with the top prize going to the villain origin story starring Joaquin Phoenix.

Todd Phillips' Joker took home the Golden Lion top prize in Venice on Saturday night, while Roman Polanski won the second place Silver Lion Grand Jury Prize for An Officer and a Spy.

Upon receiving the prize, Phillips thanked "Warner Bros. and DC for stepping out of their comfort zone and taking such a bold swing on me and this movie."

And of the film's star Joaquin Phoenix, who joined Phillips onstage, the director said, "There is no movie without Joaquin Phoenix. Joaquin is the fiercest and brightest and most open-minded lion I know. Thank you for trusting me with your insane talent."

The 76th edition of the world’s oldest film festival wrapped Saturday night after 11 nights of world premieres.

Just to reminds everyone, that in the past two years, films that won Best Film at Venice Film Festival, (The Shape Of Water, Roma) also ended up winning Best Picture and Best Director respectively on Oscars. But the downside is both also kinda not very good commercially.

So, which one Joker's fate will be? Winning an Oscars but flops? Commercial success but barren from Oscars noms? Or will it be on of the rare occasions where the movie can have both? Or..., they don't have either? :flower:

Also, there are already usual and boring protests by the movie snobs cos "A superheroes movie win it, boohoo!" :lmao: People really hates change, don't they? Esp. they haven't even seen the movie yet.

River

Joker is not exactly a superhero film tbh

I mean they are just using a comics character but it could be a movie on it's own without the character's name to rely on, this is why is so praised, because it's more a dramatic psychological and social movie that uses a comics character to express it.

So sploosh your juice all over me you Riverboy

Exactly. I hate when both critics and public use this excuse, it's just so close minded. A super hero movie can be 100000 times better than whatever film, some people just need to stop judging without even seeing a superheroes /MCU/DC/whateveryouwant film. Just stop :saladga:

Be kind 🧡
