Writing on Instagram, Azealia wrote: "Lmao the fact that the public and the media has been keeping this fat girl joke going for so long is honestly peak boredom," said Banks, holder of zero Hot 100 top 10 singles. "The song is not good, nor is the dumpy fat girl spectacle live set she does. Saddest bit is that the girl is legit talented and truly only being allowed to shine so long as she allows herself to be this millennial mammy of sorts." This was one of many comments she made in a very long statement in which she also slammed Cardi, Lil Nas X and Adele (full thing included in these pulled quotes in the article and in various online videos: https://www.complex.com/music/2019/09/azealia-banks-lizzo-making-fool-of-herself-white-american-public Azealia's been so quiet for a while now, I wondered when she was going to say something and to who. Thing is, some of the things she says, I kinda agree with as I do think Lizzo's image hardly does her any favours, I'm not keen on the song and I do think there's a lot of very untalented/low talented people being pushed in the music business right now. However, I don't think the executives can be blamed for it all or that they want to create a stereotyped image of black entertainers so white audiences can laugh at them. They're picking up on who will be good, signing them, promoting them and the public picks who they like best. They're just giving the public what they want. And the public don't always make good choices. Plus, most black entertainers have a lot of black fans, it's hardly just white audiences alone making them successful. And like it or not, black audiences can, consciously or subconsciously, enjoy being entertained by black stereotypes. Plenty of talented white singers can't make it either yet lesser talented white and black singers who do the same thing as them can. It's all a matter of time and place and the industry can't spoon-feed to us who they want to be big anymore, the public's power is too strong now due to streaming. Lizzo's where she is because the public put her there, execs can't manufacture a star who has no public demand these days. And since when was Beyonce not given the top spot in the industry's mind?
