The amazon fires are catastrophic, general deforestation is much worse

news outlets are failing in giving the whole social and political scope of the fires, Bolsonaro's administration is the real villain in this situation it further accelerated an ongoing environmental problem that sent the country into chaos. After reading what Macron had to say about this situation I went into full conspiracy theory mode and now I'm almost certain the west (the USA and the EU) will use this tragedy as an excuse to seize the Amazon from Brazil, Colombia and Peru lmao.

Complaining about demagogy and then going as far as making a  thread with a title filled with demagoguery is laughable. It's true that fires aren't the main cause of deforestation but at this very moment they are main priority not only bc of the short term effects but if the fires aren't dealt with right now they will disrupt the Amazon's resilience and a disastrous desertification process will begin sooner than we think, and even more native brazilians will be killed or striped away from their lands.

This situation is extremely complicated we shouldn't be analysing it solely through an environmental lens, ignoring the political root (like most news outlets) is just as bad as saying the fires aren't that important.

I think everyone needs to chill for a moment, take a breather, and then resume the discussions. Some people are getting a bit crazy with their commentary.

At the end of the day, we should be coming together to fight the good fight and take advantage of resources to take action against these types of tragedies. It’s about being the change you want to see.

All I see, is back and forth banter about who’s right vs who’s wrong; everyone has shared some good points, but you’re letting the anger control your statements and giving these a-holes in power exactly what they want...which is for us to turn against each other.

Sneaky Oliver

Hey guys. I know i'm a bit late to the conversation but i wanted to say a few things. Please read!

1. Here in Brazil we have a biome called Cerrado which's similar to savannahs and natural wildfires are very common in this specic biome, unlike Amazon rainforest.

2. Bolsonaro had spoken multiple times about using the -once- protected areas of greenery for economic growth and he even blamed NGOs and environmentalists for the recent wildfires as an attempt to generate bad media for him and take down his government.

3. Besides deforestation, of course, remember animals are burning alive, native folks are being killed and exploited and the smoke has been spreading all over the country miles away from the Forest, it contributes for air pollution and many diseases.

So it IS a huge problem, besides the political extent of it, european nations are discussing punishments which may end up in economic crisis and mass layoffs and internal conflicts in Mercosul/Southern Common Market

Bolsenaro should be held accountable and be sued by all countries in the world... I really hope he could get convicted.... it would only be a slight compensation for the crime he's responsible for.

I honestly feel there should be a system that would allow for politicians to be sued, especially in cases like this.
