Especially in the long run

True some green innitiatives are not as economical as the dirty way of doing things but the long term cost of increased storm natural disasters and decreased crop returns from either increased flooding or droughts outways any cost of green investments now

I don't believe civilization would end the way many ppl dramatize cuz humans are a super adaptable species. Were the only mammal species capable of surviving in every continent thanks to technology

Most of the earth would have to be dead before humans were wiped out along with it

But I do think our standard of living can drop a lot as food costs would surge and natural disaster costs would surge as well not to mention lost cities by the Coast which would have to either spend a fortune on levies, or people would spend a fortune relocating and loosing the real-estate they invested in

Food isn't the problem that's being touted...

It's supplying current and future population growth that's the issue...

The us alone can supply several times its current output since only a small percentage of tillable soil is even used..

Uneven logistics and wealth are the biggest obstacles...

Climate change can be adapted too unless a  global event occurs

like a cat in a sil, I observe life, moving and still. My words give a clue, look inside to see whats true

What I mean is if droughts or floods increase crop yield damage, the cost of food will go up substantially

There may be enough earth to grow all our food but if yields per square footage drop due to unfavorable climate change, that means more work and land to produce the same amount of food

I didn't say I think we'd starve. But I think it's gonna hurt ppls wallets...

And since food is a basic necessity, any increase in cost would have a regressive effect on standard of living on the bottom 50% to 70%

I can see that alone affecting the economy (if the increase was significant enough)

I don't know about the US but here in Canada besides housing, nothing has been increasing at a faster rate than food especially fruits, vegetables and meat

Inflation may be sub 2% but food inflation is always 4% plus

I mean as far as oil goes... Electric cars keep getting better and cheaper... Hopefully soon they will make economic sense even without subsidies

Coal... I think either banning it or a carbon tax as adopted by some Nations would be the most realistic

I mean my Province (Ontario) hardly uses any coal anymore... It's all Nuclear, Water-Hydro, Natural Gas and some Wind and Solar

We have one of the most expensive electricity costs in North America tho

In the Province of Quebec for example electricity is less than half the cost :neyde:

Yes but the rich guys cant profit out of clean energy as much as they do with oil and coal, so theyll keep lobbying and donating money to politicians that protect those interests.

We need someone that not only is willing to give those people the finger and push clean energy, but also someone who isnt afraid to do it fast no matter the consequences.

Do you known why electricity is less expensive there? Do they produce more or are they using gaz and coal?

Quebecs energy is relatively clean too actually

Ontario problem is actually more a series of mismanagement that caused this problem

For starters Ontario invested a lot in green energyany years ago when it was still more expensive. That's fine in itself but they locked in prices and long term contracts which was stupid because they should of known the cost of green energy would drop over time

Take solar for example. It's costs have plummeted over the years but we have no seen the savings because the long term contracts they made are still in effect so we're still paying old prices

Ontario also made some poor decisions with power plants. Nearly $1 Billion was spent on a gas plant that neighbors didn't want in their area and after a lot of protests and court meetings it ended up being scrapped and so the costs of losses were absorbed by Hydro one and thus passed on to consumers

There were additional mistakes over the years too I can't remember them all. Over the 15 years the Liberals ruled Ontario one of their biggest points of criticisms was how badly they mismanaged the hydro system as how much we have to pay for power now as a result

Some economists suggest the reason the manufacturing recovery happened in Quebec but not Ontario after the great recession is because of how expensive our electricity is
