BTS fans think VMAs Kpop award is a way of excluding the band

BTS fans, however, have berated the decision as a racist double standard in MTV’s major awards categories. They flooded social media with hashtags protesting BTS’s sidelining, many citing metrics related to BTS’s tremendous overseas success.

Though the optics admittedly aren’t great, it’s impossible to know whether race or nationality is actually involved in BTS’s sidelining. The VMA nomination process is highly mysterious: It’s completely opaque, and may be entirely based on the whims of MTV executives — and who really knows what they’re thinking? (Vox has reached out to MTV for comment.)

Still, the argument that BTS deserves to be nominated in the major categories, as befitting other major artists of the year, is a compelling one. It’s pretty hard to deny that BTS is a pop phenomenon whose ongoing commercial and cultural success in the US shows no sign of slowing down.

I was surprised there was even a kpop category this year, tbh they should be grateful because this is a step towards the right direction on the part of western award shows

I guess it’s just because they prefer English songs for the main categories? I mean Despacito was a humongous hit but was excluded from the main categories.

Feels like they just made a category for them.

However if this is a fan vote, we all know that BTS fans will blow everyone else out of the water in the other categories and maybe the execs don't want that? It's weird

How is creating a category for kpop bands racist? Kpop is a specific genre of pop which is why they made the category, like... I can’t with these preteen fans lmao

It does seem a tiny bit weird to make a cateogry for just one type of music genre that is not really a genre in itself...it's just pop music sung in the korean language so shouldnt it be in the pop categories? idk. I dont get the big outrage about this decision but I can understand how their fans could be a little disapointed. They were prob hoping and thinking their favs would be in the important categories or something.

They are being greedy, Boy with Luv isn't that good of a video. Superhuman should be nominated instead.

Kpop category is a fine compromise. It's not like countries outside of USA are rewarding artist in a global scale, and often just have a '' foreign '' category.

They behave like if they were 'American' Music Awards, lol...

It's really sad how music in English is somehow 'priviledged' over non-English music...

Why do they have Latin Grammy awards, but the one for English music is 'Grammy awards'? 'Cuz the only different is the language in which the music is sung...

Those fans need to understand the title of their album more. Love yourself, don't be a mess.
