Miaou 39,013
Belgium and the Netherlands have recorded their highest ever temperatures, in a heatwave searing Western Europe. The Belgian town of Kleine Brogel in Limburg province hit 39.9C (102F), the hottest since records began in 1833. A Eurostar train broke down in the extreme heat, trapping passengers. The southern Dutch city of Eindhoven saw 39.3C, hours after the 75-year-old national record in the Netherlands was broken at a nearby airbase. Amid the sweltering temperatures, French reports suggested five deaths might have been linked to the heatwave. The highest temperature recorded in Paris - 40.4C in 1947 - is expected to be surpassed on Thursday. Luxembourg is on red alert for the south and the capital - with top temperatures possibly climbing to 40C on Wednesday and even higher on Thursday. The hottest areas were in the Dutch province of Brabant and across the Belgian border in the Flemish province of Limburg. The Dutch record was initially broken with 38.8C at Gilze-Rijen airbase on Wednesday, before a higher temperature was recorded in Eindhoven. In Kleine Brogel, the record was broken early in the afternoon at 38.9C but the temperature continued to climb to 39.9C by 17:00 (15:00 GMT). Belgium has issued a code red weather warning for the whole country. A big bridge at the Dutch port of Rotterdam was being sprayed to prevent the metal expanding in the heat. Much of France was also sweltering. La chaîne météo reported that the temperature in several areas had climbed above 40C. Pont-la-Ville in the eastern area of Haute-Marne reached 41.2C while Vassincourt to the north-east reached 40.5C. Thursday could see 42C in the French capital. Authorities launched a red alert in the Paris region and 19 other French departments, calling for "absolute vigilance", and comparisons were drawn to a heatwave in August 2003, during which heat contributed to almost 15,000 deaths. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-49100271 BREAKING: Paris and northern France put on RED alert as temperatures soar towards 40C Météo France took the stop of increasing the alert level from orange to red with the worst of the heatwave still to hit the Paris region and northern France. As well as Paris and its surrounding départements in Île-de-France, other parts of the north on red alert included parts of Normandy and the Hauts-de-France region. Some 60 départements were still on orange alert, with only Brittany escaping the sweltering heatwave. The red alerts will be in place until Thursday when temperatures are set to peak in northern France. The all-time high temperature recorded in Paris of 40.4C could well be broken. Météo France believe temperatures in Paris could reach 42C on Thursday. France's Health Minister Agnes Buzyn had a stern warning for members of the public who could suffer health problems as a result of the extreme heat: "Everyone is at risk with these kinds of temperatures."She warned that it was ill-advised to take part in any sporting activity over the coming days. It's only the second time Météo France has issued red level warnings for a heatwave in France. The first time was during June's heatwave when several départements in the south were place on red alert as France recorded its highest ever temperature of 46C. The red level alert, which is for a "dangerous weather phenomenon" comes with some warnings for the public to take the upmost precaution. Météo France said "all of us are threatened, even healthy people". It adds: "The danger is greater for seniors, people with chronic illness or mental health issues, people who take regular medications and people who are isolated." Those who work outside are told to take care and watch out for the signs of heat stroke, which include: fever over 40C, hot, red and dry skin, headaches, nausea, drowsiness, intense thirst, confusion and convulsions. https://www.thelocal.fr/20190724/breaking-paris-and-northern-france-put-on-red-alert-for Even the UK could see its all time high temperature record broken.
