Women are criticized unfairly for not wearing makeup in their professional and private lives. For example, we wouldn't expect Gaga to attend an award show without makeup on. She has great features, great skin, fillers, all the qualifiers and yet our culture demands this extra layer regardless. Women can only subvert expectations for so long with heavier eyeliner and unconventional lipstick colors. Makeup is a form of (temporary) body modification in my opinion. How can I trick the eye into thinking my skin is flawless? How can I make my eyelashes longer? My lips softer and darker? But, that's also a very unsettling idea because then it becomes about being your own voyeur; you don't know if you're doing something for yourself or others. I personally don't think the master's tools can dismantle the master's house when it comes to makeup but this is where the 'makeup is a form of self expression' argument thrives. A beat face is artistry, I guess, but it's a means to an end; it's really not fun to cover your eyelashes in sticky black goop by any means. Sorry to take this out on you lol but it's genuinely interesting to think about! I agree with you. Culture demands women to wear makeup, and yes i don't know where the line is of wearing makeup for yourself or for others starts. I don't use makeup. I question it cause i wanted some opinions and cause i used to hang out with a group of girls that used makeup to make their eyes darker and stuff, and i always felt that was part of them, the way they express themselves, their identity (gothic style, i think, sorry English isn't my first language sometimes i have an hard time to explain myself better here). People are way more than their tattoos, piercings or the make-up they wear. It's actually sad that one feels the need to have validation of yourself through things. You are you with or without piercings or tattoos or make-up. They helped me be who I am somehow, and i consider it part of my identity. If they were erased from my body it would be like waking up with a different face. I certainly wouldn't die from it. So i agree to disagree. We see it differently no need argue it further. 🙂

That's not true Until like... 2014 there was one thing that was always consistent with her: that she was passionate about music more than anything else. Writing music, creating art. That was always the golden thread. Then suddenly she "rediscovered her true self" or whatever with a bunch of different men (Tony, Murphy, Cooper) and the whole story became confused. But we were not confused for years on end. That whole self-contradicting thing was never as flagrant as in her post-2014 career. I think you really should distinguish between that early sense of "ok, we don't know exactly who she is but at least we know she's an artist through and through" and the current general confusion about what it is exactly that she's most passionate about. Music? Acting? Singing? I don't know either anymore tbh. In 2014 she was 27. That's when Pop stars start to "get old." Honestly, in your late 20's you start to mature more and reach that point where you've really discovered who you are and what you want to do. I feel like we saw the shift because of that. Her music wasn't going to maintain her lifestyle forever. So now what we've seen is her venture into new lanes that make her money and make her gain status. Acting, business, jazz. I also don't see why we need to constantly bring up the things she said at the start of her career. I feel like we ALL evolve as people over time. She is now 33 years old. She is not 23 anymore. Our way of thinking changes and priorities change over time. We don't have to like everything she does, etc. but I feel like the essence of GAGA is still there no matter what she does

Your English is great, don't worry 'bout it. I think you put it perfectly: the line is arbitrary. Members of subcultures utilize makeup in ways that are more similar to tattoos and piercings because the styles/techniques are generally nontraditional but that also means these people represent a very small fraction of makeup buyers. It's the slight difference between a typical ear piercing and, say, someone's industrial piercing, y'know? Another argument mentioned a lot is that women don't wear intense makeup for men because men can't really appreciate makeup (which is true), so we must be doing it for our self or ourselves (it's tricky!), but I genuinely believe makeup is an interpersonal activity for women and, bringing it back to M's point, that's how capitalism exploits identity-building practices and makeup becomes a "hobby." Acceptance of one self should bring more value to your life than anything else. I'm happy with myself. But i struggle as a teen to find my way, to find my value. My tattoos and piercings were precious "tools" support for me to manage my anxiety, to be bold, to find my way and value. Not everyone gets there easily. It's been a long, long time, i don't need them that way since years, i don't need my tattoos to find my way and to know my value but i know the importance they had for me. Schwerk 7,244
The strange thing is a little goes a long way. For example I think many fans would complain less if Gaga didn't just post on Instagram when she has something to promote, but share a few more fun more candid pictures and messages like she used to. Now it's just a marketing tool and that's even more apparent at times like this. Everything seems a bit too calculated. I hope they'll at least change her social media strategy a bit and she will post a little more candid things again because it will help her on all levels I feel. According to Gaga I'm a ****ing rad bitch

It has cost which therefore clearly states that you need to buy to get that sense of identity that you long for. And I am sorry but wasn't Gaga all about music and the message that her songs had? How is creating a make-up line related to her music artistry? Cause i was just talking how some people do have a relationship with make up, some say is therapeutic is a hobbie and stuff. Yeah it is a just a product, yeah some people think it's important so what Gaga is a visual artist as well all of her biggest influences are artists who transformed themselves competely with the help of ... make up. So saying make up is not part of her artistry is kinda dumb. She's a pop artist she bases at lot of her art in imagery, or do you think she goes out in 30cm heels with dresses that become alive just for no goddamn reason? WitnessEye 306
For a lot people judging her because she started a brand, you took her too seriously in every way. She is doing this for the money, which is normal, she is just a businesswoman. She can sing, dance, act and sell you products, and what's wrong with that? You jealous? Everybody will do everything for the money, especially this beauty thing which is in trend now. Think about this a little.
