Of course Americans are afraid of that and of course they equate the idea of full coverage as necessarily supplementing it with private insurance- it is all Americans have ever known. This simply is not the case, however. Keep Medicare for all WELL funded and we won’t have any problems. 

Keep research and development well funded and we won’t have a single problem. 

Know that and yell it as loud as you can so that conservative and neoliberal politicians get the hint. No politician will ever even THINK of touching Medicare for all once it has been rolled out completely. 

No, it’s not a red herring. It’s simply skepticism over handing over your healthcare needs to the government, when you already have insurance. People want to keep their insurance, and want to see how it goes with the Medicare for those under 65...before they give up what they have. 

It’s not that people don’t want the uninsured to be insured, or that they don’t want more affordable healthcare, they simply don’t trust the government with something so important. They are already covered under good plans and don’t want to give that up until they are sure the government has their **** together. (and who can blame them for being mistrustful of this ultra-partisan environment)
