The Obama administration did not allow them to purchase what they needed from the US, they waited years despite being NATO allies...and so they looked elsewhere and got Russian missles which they needed to defend their eastern and southern borders. Now the US wants to sanction them over it cuz they say it isn't compatible with NATO weapons and Turkey is part of NATO so they need compatible weaponry. Trump low key admitted that it was a BIG mistake for the US to have not sold Turkey the stuff they needed when they needed it cuz well they looked elsewhere which is normal.
