The first Democratic debate has reshaped the presidential field in Iowa, surging support for California Sen. Kamala Harris, undercutting the standing of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, and raising questions about the solidity of former vice president Joe Biden's frontrunner status.

In a new Suffolk University/USA TODAY Poll, Biden continues to lead the field, backed by 24% of those who say they are likely to attend the Democratic caucuses in Iowa that open the presidential contests next year. But Harris has jumped to second place, at 16%, leapfrogging over Sanders, whose support sagged to single digits. At 9%, he finished fourth, behind Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren at 13%.

The new standings are hardly set in stone. Twenty-one percent are undecided. Six of 10 who have decided say they might change their mind before the caucuses. Just one in four say their minds are firmly made up. The second set of debates, scheduled for the end of the month in Detroit, could upend the horserace again.

Thought I’d share since it’s the first Iowa poll done after the first debate. These numbers are obviously just a snapshot of what’s happening right now and can’t predict where the race will be as we get closer. Still interesting to see how much hot water Biden could be in.

I love Sanders and support his policies 100%. That said, I hope his campaign quickly sinks because there is still too much bitterness about the Sanders—DNC conflict we had in 2016 (Summary: A lot of Sanders supporters appeared to feel [1] that the Democratic party was being unfair against Sanders  when giving Clinton the nomination in 2016). I do not want to give the kinds of people opposed to gay equality and who support prejudice against people of other skin color and religion  any ammunition from the left to help the hateful right wing win like they did in 2016.

That in mind, I really like Warren, because she supports the same policies without the bitter aftertaste of the 2016 election. I also like Harris, but keep in mind I did vote against her for senate in 2016 because I felt she was a little too pro-authoritarian. But I would vote for her for president in a heartbeat. Heck, I would vote Duncan Jones for president [2] before even contemplating voting for Trump.

[1] Online personas and sockpuppets can be easily manufactured by troll farms, so what I see on Reddit/whatever may not reflect how actual voters feel

[2] Duncan Jones can not run for president of the US because he was born in London, but you get the point

Where's our girlfriend Marianne?

In all seriousness, though, Williamson is all good with Sanders and Warren on many things.  The lovey dovey talk gets old with her but she's pretty progressive!

Bring it on, Sanders/Warren 2020!

Wow they’re pretty much identical in terms of ranking across the board.

I’m sure news outlets are relieved that their takes on the debate have been backed up by public opinion online and now the polls.

Granted the news reaction was undeniably because Kamala rocked that debate & Warren was the only one alive at the 1st debate. They were reacting to it just like everyone else.

Why doesn’t anyone like that Former Colorado Governor? I think all of his ideas are pretty solid and he has a great history
