Even though we've had some succes in some areas of the world or even inside the united states, the war is yet to be won. Christian extremists are still present. In fact, a new wave of conservatism may be in rise. (Check 4chan's politically incorrect subforum). I don't think gay rights are fully enforced in all areas of the US or even the world. Even if Gay Rights are already achieved in the US maybe the next move for us is Universal Gay Rights for all humans. As of late, 2-3 trans people are murdered per week. I do not have a number for gay men specifically. So I won't even read this article. The battle is not over. It is not over until our trans brothers and sisters have the same rights and protections as the rest of us. It is not over until our politicians erase "same-sex marriage" from their vocabulary. It is not over until more than 50% of gay people feel comfortable being out with their coworkers. It is not over until the 90% of trans Americans who have been fired / not hired because of their gender can find and keep jobs long-term. If we stop fighting now, if we stop standing up now, the other side that is still fighting against us will keep pushing forward. We're slightly more visible and it's not as popular to openly hate us as it used to be, but we're still infinitely more likely to live in poverty, to be disowned, to experience prejudice in the workplace. We're still widely prevented from donating blood because we're still perceived as disproportionately diseased and AIDS-riddled. We're killed regularly, black and brown queer people especially, black trans women in particular. Plus, the "acceptance" we experience today is largely relegated to rainbow capitalism rather than real liberation, an attempt to commodify our pain and oppression for corporate profit. Celebrities endorse our community because they want to market to us. The same politicians that opposed our rights for years pay lip service to us for votes. This article was dragged to hell and back on Twitter when it was first published, and rightfully so. I can't imagine actually believing that anti-queer sentiment is gone because we're allowed to get married and celebrities and corporations try to pander to us in June every year. Over here in Australia we have a hugely homophobic sport star raising sympathy funds (hundreds of thousands of dollars within days) because he was fired for saying all homosexuals are going to Hell and spouting hatred of trans people. lot of people here support him, denying that his religious stance is homophobic and calling it a “freedom fight”. When lots of us are still beaten up for dressing fem or butch or whatever? When lots of us still pressured to come out when it is private matter? It's far from over. Lots of things need to be fought for and for everyone to have perfect understanding. When everyone, whoever they are, did not bat an eye, since it was ordinary, it was just human nature, when they see gay people dressing whatever they want, when they see gay couples hold hands or kiss on pavement, when gay people don't feel the need to come out cos it is just like every other gender or sexual preference, when gay people don't ever feel threatened to get fired for being themselves, and lotsa more, then maybe we can call the fight is over. NOT EVEN IN WESTERN COUNTRIES is normalized yet, teens are getting kicked out of their own home because they are gay, and that happens EVERYWHERE.
