ladylinners 485
She's already picked something as she has accepted the invitation. I do wonder if she picked the acting branch based on the fact that they are using a gif with Julie Andrews and the caption "from one musical legend to another". Julie won best actress for Mary Poppins and is a member herself of the acting branch. But that is just highly speculative. Whatever she chooses she's an AMPAS member She get's to nominate for Best Picture though regardless of branch as all branches nominate for that category. As @Tyler1992 just posted, you cannot be a member of both branches. "Six individuals (noted by an asterisk) have been invited to join the Academy by multiple branches. These individuals must select one branch upon accepting membership." https://www.oscars.org/sites/oscars/files/microsites/newmembers2019/pdf/2019_new_members.pdf She didnt produce nor wrote the song so why is she there Im not hating tho it may appear that way 🤖

azul 2,099
I think she will choose the acting branch. She is not done with the acting gig, I feel she wants to be recognised in that field too

She wrote it together with Paul Epworth. "To be considered for invitation to membership in the Music Branch of the Academy, an individual must: (a) have a minimum of three on-screen, theatrical feature film credits (one of the films having been released in the past six years) in which the composing, lyric writing or music editing aspects have achieved distinction and, in the opinion of the Music Branch Executive Committee, reflect the high standards of the Academy, or (b) have a minimum of three on-screen, theatrical feature film credits and, in the view of the executive committee, have made an outstanding musical contribution in the field of theatrical motion pictures, (the foregoing paragraphs specifically exclude credits for licensed music not written directly for the motion picture in which it receives a screen credit, as well as screen credits for the duties of Music Producer, Music Supervisor, Orchestrator, or Performer) or (c) have been nominated for an Academy Music Award." https://www.oscars.org/about/branch-requirements/music Based on the criteria for membership both Adele and Gaga were invited because they have been nominated. Neither of them have enough theatrical feature film credits to be nominated on that merit (Gaga only has ASIB and Adele only has Skyfall). Same goes for Gaga for the acting branch, she was invited because she has been nominated. As such, Adele has as much right as Gaga to be invited to join the academy. "To be considered for invitation to membership in the Actors Branch of the Academy, an individual must: (a) have a minimum of three theatrical feature film credits, in all of which the roles played were scripted roles, one of which was released in the past five years, and all of which are of a caliber that reflect the high standards of the Academy, and/or (b) have been nominated for an Academy Award in one of the acting categories, or (c) have, in the judgment of the Actors Branch Executive Committee, otherwise achieved unique distinction, earned special merit or made an outstanding contribution as a motion picture actor." https://www.oscars.org/about/branch-requirements/actors

I can't say how it has been for previous years. She was one of only six people to get invited by more than one branch this year. 40 minutes ago, hausga said: isn't Barbara Streisand a part of the Academy too? . isn't she also a member of both branches? . just asking Yes. She became a member in 1967. Her membership was controversial at the time as she got in before starring in a movie. https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/gregory-peck-defended-barbra-streisands-oscars-membership-1191304 However, it looks like she is part of the acting branch. Even though she became a member before 'Funny Girl' came out they refer to the fact that "She was a great star of the Broadway stage". Depending on if the by-laws have been revised it might be possible that they previously had another stance on being a member of of two branches but I think Barbara is only a member of the actors branch. Though, as there is no offically published membership list I cannot say for sure. But as far as I can google on short notice, it looks as she's a member of the actors branch only. All Oscar categories are on the ballot for voting members. However, only the seperate branches can nominate for the category. Nominations: "Most categories are nominated by the members of the corresponding branch–actors nominate actors, film editors nominate film editors, etc. However, certain categories such as Foreign Language Film and Animated Feature Film have special voting rules which can be viewed at our Rules & Eligibility page. All voting members are eligible to select the Best Picture nominees." Voting: "During finals, all Oscar categories are on the ballot for voting members." https://www.oscars.org/oscars/voting

Check Golderby, an expert and admin there already confirmed that Gaga would be able to vote in both. So please don't be sure about things you don't know. The official Oscar page says that you have to join one of the branches (she cannot join both this is stated on the invitation for membership). It also says you can only nominate within your own branch, but you vote for all categories. Im reading the bylaws which the ampas adhere to. Im not sure if you are confusing nominations with voting. I’m not saying she cannot vote in all categories (she will be able to vote for all categories) but she can only nominate within her branch. Those are two separate processes. freebit 6,240
If I was her I'd choose the acting branch - voting is more fun because of Best Actor/Actress & Supporting. Plus the acting branch voted her in as soon as they could .
