Morphine Prince 106,210
Cardi B will not be able to exclusively cash in on her well known catchphrase after officials shut down the hip-hop star and claimed her phrase isn't all that special. According to documents obtained by The Blast, Cardi was refused a trademark registration after filing to lock down her phrase, "Okurrr." U.S. Patent and Trademark officials explained that Cardi's slogan falls under the category of "widely-used commonplace expressions," and did not fit the bill to deserve a trademark. They also noted that Okurrr, "is a slogan or term that does not function as a trademark or service mark to indicate the source of applicant’s goods and/or services," and that it does not distinguish itself from other similar marks. The refusal by officials hasn't completely closed the door for Cardi, because she still has a chance to make changes and argue her case before the trademark is completely abandoned. AlexanderMagno 10,746
I'm not from the USA so I might be ignorant on this, but I had no idea Okurrr was so associated with Cardi B so, yeah I'd agree that it's not that special. Even "rah rah" sounds more trademarked for Gaga then "okurrr" for Cardi.

uo111 5,265
A straight woman wasn't allowed to trademark gay culture. The most surprising thing is that U.S. Patent and Trademark knew she didn't invent it. Is U.S. Patent and Trademark a hunty?

DontDoubtDavid 1,191
Actually, Laganja took it from Laura Bell Bundy’s character Shocantelle Brown. But yes, glad Cardi didn’t get this trademarked.
Guest
Good, you shouldn’t be able to take an entire communities cultural words & trademark it as your own just because you use it a lot. Can straight women stop stealing from the gay community? That’d be great.

Hybrid AT 78
Of course it's denied, she should try with 'okurrrtt' now "I was protected by the monks of Azarath, I was raised by my friends. They are my family, this is my home and you are not welcome here."
