And I guess you can argue about the greed of health insurance companies and how they basically rip people off. In many countries it’s a mix of government plans and private ones though. I don’t think that would happen at all, imo. No matter how low the government goes, there will always be at least one company that either figures out how, or at least accepts smaller profits, to make it even cheaper. That’s just capitalism. As far as I know many countries with universal healthcare still have a private sector. Yeah like here in Canada. We have private insurances too. I have one I get thru work that I deduct for (I pay 50% and the company pays 50%) We use it for the Private parts of healthcare not covered by Government like Dental, Prescriptions, Vision Care, Chiropractors, Medical equipment (like a cast or brace for example) etc etc etc There's also matters like insurance for when you travel abroad or life insurance in case of an accident If we have a private health insurance industry the US definitely needs theirs

Because the government plan would still be available for those who are unhappy. If the private insurance rates were bad and the government rates were good, people would simply not buy the private insurance. Right? I don’t see the need to not allow private insurance to exist. That is a great question. Maybe if someone thinks the healthcare insurance industry is immoral. As some people do.

In that case, wouldn't it be best to not get rid of the private health care system and instead propose something similar to what Buttigieg said about having both a government run health care system and a prive sector? It may be more cost effective for the government, but if people are fine with the private health insurance now, why should they completely abolish it? I understand having a government run system for lower income families, and people who just generally might not be able to afford private insurance, and I am all for that, but if you have a family who's fine with what they have right now, I don't see a reason to take that away from them. No, private insurance is a leach on American healthcare costs and should be mostly done away with. If everyone in America is given comprehensive insurance thru the government that includes all medically necessary care, why do we need private companies doing the same thing? The best case scenario is that they’ll be a do nothing but the worst case scenario is that doctors refuse to see people in the government plan and only take private insurance because it pays more. If the government is the sole insurer, the single payer if u will, that gives the us government the best position possible to negotiate prices with care providers, drug companies, etc. We don’t need a blood sucking industry to be involved here. Sanders, Harris, Warren, etc are absolutely right. That said, only duplicative procedures are banned under the plan, if something isn’t provided by the government, a private company can provide it but anything medically necessary is already being provided by the federal government, so private insurance in mass is opselete. Abolishing private health insurance and implementing a medicare for all style public healthcare system is a life or death scenario for millions of people. So far, Sanders and Warren are the only two who've committed to doing away with it in these debates. I live in Canada and we still need private health care insurances for a lot of stuff. U couldn't just get rid of it But I agree relying on it more than necessary just raises the cost of everything Healthcare being private in general also raises the cost of healthcare This is why America spends more on healthcare than most OECD Nations per capita But u can't get rid of insurance companies with Medicaid tho
