Ok thank you for explaining. What does public option or single payer mean? I tried searching but still could not understand. I see candidates say they support these instead of medicare for all and progressives get pissed.

Can we also discuss the fact the healthcare system in the US has basically created the illusion you NEED a good private health insurance plan with the fact the cost of healthcare here is OUTRAGEOUS. 

So clearly nobody but the rich can pay for most of the services.

A single payers system is one where healthcare costs are covered through taxes (government run coverage). 

Medicare For All is a single payer program so I'm not sure what you mean. I don't think I've seen people discussing it that way. Or maybe they are discussing the label.

Private health insurance gives me a lot of unilateral power over my health. As someone with medical issues, I like to be able to be in as much control as possible. I am able to choose my doctors and specialists freely and see them in a timely manner.

I honestly interpreted the question the same way she did, they themselves would give up their coverage. Unless they asked that separately, and this was a diff question

That's how I understood the question as well. Who of them would give up their own private insurance for universal.

The argument is costs would go down and coverage would be available for everyone. And I guess you can argue about the greed of health insurance companies and how they basically rip people off. 

In many countries it’s a mix of government plans and private ones though.

As far as I know many countries with universal healthcare still have a private sector. 

My first instinct is to say no, as I would like to keep mine. There are millions of other people like me that are happy with their insurance from the private sector.

At the same time, I’m all for insurance for everyone, so I want a way to cover those that currently don’t have insurance...for whatever reason.

I don't think it should be abolished. I want everyone to have coverage, but if I have the means for a good supplemental insurance plan why wouldn't I get one.

It was incredibly encouraging to see her finally take a stand on a controversial issue such as this, and actually made me consider possibly supporting her should Sanders or Warren sputter out.

That's gone now. Harris proves herself, yet again and unfortunately, another corporate shill whose primary strength is her oratory and playing to identity politics.

As of right now, I think what makes the most sense is what Buttigieg said last night—I believe it was him, but feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. Why can't there be a system where the government has  a universal health care initiative,  but also a private sector? If people are fine with their private insurance now, why force them to get on a government run program? That seems like a hassle. If people want  to be apart of that "health care for all" system, they can totally do that and should be able to do that, but why not have the option of doing it?

Again, not trying to start anything, just genuinely curious because honestly that plan makes the most sense to me.

Because then all the old and sick will be on the government plan and the young and healthy will be on the private market, creating a situation where the government plan is most expensive.

That's not really true. Most young people are trying to save money. I'd say people who are not retirement age but probably not in their 20 or 30 are the ones who would like their own private insurance.
