Why are a lot of people obsessed with a song's chart placement?

One of the many posts I see on this site is where a song is on the charts. Is there a real reason why chart placement is so important for an artist and their work? Is this a thing attributed to stan culture? Does it really dictate whether a song is good or bad.

Sound off below:

Sidenote: I don't know if a post like this has been made so sorry if it has. Me personally, I stopped caring about chart placement a longgg time ago. I'm just curious to hear different opinions from members.

For me it's a nice bonus but some people on here act like their lives depend from it

yeah they don't understand that they feed the records companies with their money hungry game.. the fact that an artist, including big names, can be kicked out of their contract, get less funds, being destroyed, because their very good song didn't hit top 10 in it's first week, it's just cruel and disgusting..

So sploosh your juice all over me you Riverboy

Because some stans want their fave to be super successful on the charts, and if a song is a hit on the charts, it means the artist is famous, loved and popular, at least.

They are interesting and hold a lot of meaning to pop music since it's the music that revolves around charts. These positions may seem shallow but they give an insight about someone's place in career, are fun to track etc. It's debatable if you can call a yourself a Lady Gaga fan if you don't know at least basic chart information about her songs.

I don't like charts or care for it. Some people just want their favorite artist to be popular and I never cared about popularity I cared more about the music and the artistic vision especially when it came to gaga.

i rly do think it's kinda like gay football/soccer, it's very sports-esque in the way it's crafted into a competition where there are winners and losers, people up and down each season, comebacks, "championships," different teams and leadership, strategy, etc. people love to rag on both the seemingly unstoppable teams and seemingly disastrous teams. we've also made it very tribal, we self segregate into "standoms" that's what this website is lol so even more is emotionally invested into these "teams" and their "wins" (chart placement)

it's also similar to politics in that respect. i think people just really enjoy watching other people compete with each other, it's v entertaining to see people triumph and fall. for some people, that's politics, others movies, others music, etc.

Fan = loving an artist. Loving an artist = reading stuff about her. Reading stuff about her = finding out chart information. Debate closed. :ally:

It's the girls and gays version of league tables. I understand it's a legitimate hobby for some people and the content post in chart discussion thread (or the equivalent on other platforms) is very interesting. I love that there's a group of people who predict the charts for fun. However, thinking anything along the lines of "Gaga needs to do X to debut at X" is trap fans should avoid (ik ik it's hard) because it f*cks up your priorities as a fan.
