I was very intrigued when I heard the first seconds of it, but as soon as the chorus hit I was underwhelmed :awkney: . Zedd, honey, you created amazing music back in the day with Clarity and True Colors. But what happened to you? It sounds like any pop melody from the charts :saladga: .

I think the song will eventually grow on me, but it'll take a long time :nails:

Yes to me Ms.Perry is BACK BACK BACK AGAIN

The song is easily and I mean easily one of my top 10 Katy Perry songs

It's honestly something I've been wanting from her ever since 2013 = a mature pop jam

I feel those who were dissatisfied were expecting something other than Katy's typical bubblegum pop

I mean you'll find her exploring on her albums but otherwise almost all her singles follow the same safe pop sound

I was just hoping she'd refine that sound to be more mature and I'm glad she did with NRO

I can actually believe the song and connect with her lyrics whereas I legit could not take any of the Witness singles seriously lol. Really a 30 year old singing "got me spread like a buffet" :selena:

If she would have just changed the lyrics about lurking online/looking up the ex’s name and the one about hypnotherapy, that would have been perfect. Regardless, it’s a refreshing summer bop! :rockstar:

Minor? This is basically general acclaim. There isn't a single bad review.

Even better! Good for her :-)

Jillian Mapes, editor of Pitchfork, gave a very favorable review for "Never Really Over". Mapes felt it was a "like a promising way forward" and wrote the song had "ticking clocks, piano chords recalling 'Baba O'Riley,' a drumline, a synth-y chorus worthy of a CRJ banger". Mapes also hailed it as Perry's "best single since her own 2013's song, "Walking on Air".

Hazel Cills of Jezebel also complimented the song's production and compared it to the works of Haim and Carly Rae Jepsen. Cills summed up that Perry's career is "never really over"

Jael Goldfine of Paper also noted the positive influence of Haim and Jepsen on the main production of the track. He described the overall song as a "euphoric breakup anthem" and commended its "ousing, explosively catchy chorus" and "choppy, funky synths and self-harmonization".

While reviewing "Never Really Over", Mikael Wood from Los Angeles Times saw the musical influence of ASMR culture and complemented overall production of the track. He described lyrics as "willfully imprecise" and noted that Perry's vocals was "carefully reverbed".

In a review for The A.V. Club, Gwen Ihant praised the lyrics and felt the song had "an impressive showcase for Perry's powerful pop vocals".

Mike Wass of Idolator called "Never Really Over" a "song of the summer contender", praising the sample of Dagny's 2017 song "Love You Like That", and also noted that the song "feels like a natural progression from Witness rather than a step back."

Patrick Ryan of USA Today complimented the "pulsing Zedd-produced breakup anthem" as Perry's "best new song in years."

Toby Knapp of iHeartRadio concluded that "Never Really Over" was the right decision for the musical return of Perry, by saying, "This song is so desperately needed right now on music radio stations which haven't had some form of what I'd call a pure-pop-down-the-middle song like this for a while."

Hugh McIntyre of Forbes noted that the song "stands out in today's musical landscape while not pushing anyone too far into uncharted territory" and "could help vault [Perry] back to her former glory."

Craig Jenkins of Vulture also noted that "Never Really Over" was is a "slight return to the motivational fare Katy Perry's best at." He also hailed Perry's vocal performance as "more confident and challenging".

Robin Murray from Clash called the song a "bold, colourful return".

Looks like we might receive an album with a similar sound from her 🤷🏻‍♂️💁🏻‍♂️

Spoiler

Apparently, she said that if “Never Really Over” was successful, then she would make an album with the type of pop sound that “Never Really Over” has.

So weird honestly. It’s just a more up beat version of 365, ticking sounds and all. And its “sample” literally influences the whole song.

The music industry is weird
