As she correctly points out, and as so many of us tried to stress yesterday, an app release is purely a matter of media, and Bjork was not even the first to consider it as an interactive strategy for music distribution and composition. Gaga is being MORE THAN GENEROUS with this letter. She constantly proves to be one step ahead of the media that tries/will try again (always) to throw doubt and negativity upon her body of work. And I love that she addressed her fans. Some little monsters are out of control in terms of the language, rhetoric, and actions they adopt in an attempt to defend her. I'm glad she finally pointed it out. 100% agreed! (Such an intelligent reply, I know, but your post perfectly outlines my own feelings on the subject.) I just woke up to this mess and kept being confused as to how it was in any way possible to start comparisons as if the use of an app is not merely a medium and has anything to do with content whatsoever. I also like how she gave Björk props but did note that this is not a brand new strategy (and yes, she was more than generous in mentioning her). Love how she addressed the fanbase as well. She never claimed her APP was the first. This is my take on this... As annoying as some of the tirades were yesterday, I feel like some of them truly did come out of worry for Gaga. After what happened last year with the comparisons, the attacks and just general unpleasantness, her fans are worried for her. Because of that worry, they want to protect her. Because of wanting to protect her, whenever she does something now, in the back of their minds they are wondering if it can be compared to anything done before and if that will start yet another uprooting of crap thrown her way. So when Gaga didn't mention Bjork in her OP, they panicked. I think deep down inside they knew she wasn't claiming to be original with it but they knew the media would think so and run with it. And not just the media, but fans of other artists, etc. You saw the meltdown that happened on this very forum. So I get it. I was still irritated but I get it. I won't lie and say I don't worry too. I want this era to go better than the last one did for her. I want her to do what she wants and not feel depressed because nobody is getting it. Hopefully fans will take her up on her request. She is going out of her way to address fan concerns which is supreme customer service compared to what is usually expected from entertainers. I just need a physical copy she said it would yesterday. she said it will be released in standard physical and digital editions as well. Gaga said ARTPOP won't have the "messages" that BTW had, and that it'll just be about love and having fun. But the true message of ARTPOP is implicit in the form she is presenting the album, rather than the song lyrics. With all this multi-media she is planning on using, she is putting her middle finger up to the music industry and showing them that the artists and the people who buy their music are the ones who have the ultimate control, not the "suits" who think they know which single choices and videos the GP wants. She's showing them that the listeners are the ones who create this generation's music: after BTW, WE demanded a more fun, less serious album, and that's precisely what she's giving us. It's not that she's selling out, it's that she's showing the industry who truly has the power.
