What cost Gaga and Bradley their Oscars?

Bradley

Why he should have won best actor:

- His voice alteration was so good. I was shook that his normal voice wasn't that low.

- He sang all his songs live and he sold being a legitimate musician and singer.

- That scene when he first saw Gaga. I got teary eyed too because he was while watching La Vie En Rose.

- His final scene with his brother in the car.

- His suicide scene.

Why he didn't:

- That scene in rehab where he cried but no tears came out :bradley: It was so uncomfortable to watch.

- His really low voice sometimes cannot be understood.

Gaga

Why she should have won best actress:

- Very believable. I forgot I was watching Lady Gaga, which was an amazing feat.

- Her disappointed, angry face during the scene when Rez was telling her off for removing the back-up dancers during Heal Me, and when Jack was drunk on stage playing Pretty Woman. So subtle, but so powerful.

- That scene when she got teary-eyed in the kitchen when her dad and his friends were talking about why not all great singers make it.

- Her final scene made me tear up. She really felt it while singing I'll Never Love Again.

Why she didn't:

- Her angry scenes aren't believable. Mainly, the first scene when she was screaming on the phone in the bathroom *cringe*; and the scene when she broke all the records hanging on the walls after the suicide.

What do you guys think?

Inside, we are really made the same. 🕊

I just think everything was going to be handed to them... until Roma, Bohemian Rhapsody, and Glenn Close came in :triggered:

I think the Best Actress and Best Picture categories, were ruined since the votes split.

BA was a close tie with Glenn and Gaga, but since they split the votes, Olivia came in front.

Same with Best Picture, Roma didn’t win anything because the votes were split between BR, ASIB, and Roma, then Green Book won. (There’s a system for BP voting, were not necessarily the 1st movie on everyones votes win).

Bad timing, that was all. Both of them gave good performances, the good part of it, is that Gaga won at least an Oscar.

I don't think you can analyse scene by scene whether or not something is Oscarworthy. Voters don't spend that kind of time, they just watch all the nominated performances and then vote based on what convinced them the most.

ASIB is the kind of movie that would have swept 10 or 15 years ago, but today everything is about social justice, etc.... So what won is an actor playing a rock superstar that was gay, an actress in a movie about women in power, and a movie about racism. ASIB had no political issue it was pushing. It was actually kind of old fashioned in that it was a love story and about a young woman being discovered and made a star by a man. I think that may have been why.

I thought the scene where she breaks the records was believeble. Overall I thought both of their performances were believable. I thought Bradley's fake voice for his character was too forced. What always was against Gaga, was that she was playing a character very similar to her persona- An aspiring singer, who is actually very talented, and very Italian. This was not a stretch for her- she played that part well, because IT was pretty much her.

The movie was done well, but it was a 4th remake of a story told over and over. This also did not help with winning Oscars. I do think this opened doors for Gaga. I think she has the ability to play a great actress(more so than other singers like Madonna and Beyonce). We will see her when an Oscar for acting when she plays a role that is not so similar to her actual persona.

The Oscars are also a social game. She came off as fake from the start to some voters and she was already at a disadvantage because aside from having a very strong performance, Olivia Colman was also loved among the voters.

wtf her most believable was the bathroom scene and i thought she was very real in the post-suicide scenes

i think they didn’t win (along with the movie for best picture) because the film didn’t have an overreaching social message and it should have been released a month or 2 later. it had so much momentum but ran out by the time the oscars came

Because The Academy is garbage.

I’m blonde, I’m skinny, I’m rich and I’m a little bit of a bitch

It had nothing to do with their performances in the end because it never does. The Academy imagines itself as kingmaker. This is why all Oscar winning movies come out the month before the ceremony and the Academy favors a clique of auteurs. Award season is  pointless if audiences like a film before award season. Also, Bradley Cooper is not a likeable person and acted like a total c*nt in his only high profile solo interview but that's another issue. (eta: I sound super defensive but I just want to say I didn't care if they won anything besides BOS, and Cooper is a bad director)

"Which leads to what may be the biggest and most unavoidable obstacle between A Star Is Born and the Oscars: Hollywood is a cutthroat town that subsists on schadenfreude as much as Botox, and it's hard to root for awards for people who already seem to have everything."

In my opinion Bradleys acting was very good, and Gaga didnt f up. I was really scared they call her a bad actor. They both deliverd. Her voice  and the soundtrack is a masterpiece.

And they even got nominated for an oscar. Which is a great honor.

They lost them to other professional actors who also performed very well. I think everybody who got their oscar deserved it. and after all its not a shame to not win an oscar.

She won it for their music. Which they deserved. I would be really pis sed if that didnt work because I think it was outstanding. However. Outstanding is not the word which I would describe their acting with. It was good dont get me wrong. Very high level. And if they would have won I would be happy. (eventho I dont care that much about awards) But the others were good and maybe a little bit better.

Gaga is still goin to act, Im sure of that. So who knows. Maybe she improves more and more and will get a movie which get her another oscar, but for acting this time. Maybe not. As long as we appreciate the movie we shall not worry so much about this I think.

Nope. Olivia won BA Comedy at the Globes and the BAFTA. Gaga was probably in 3rd place the whole time.
