Paid meet & greets?

Sid

Featured Posts

So Matty from The 1975 tweeted about paid meet & greets the other day and I was curious about GGD's thoughts:

Here's my thought: inviting fans backstage, meeting them after the show, etc is awesome and great promo for an artist to show a true connection with their fans.

Personally I would never pay to be herded into a room with any artist for 30 seconds. It's one of the most tacky and cringy trends in the music industry :what:

What's your opinion? Have any of you forked over money to "meet" a celebrity?

The biggest thing I noticed in this is that it should be paid not payed.  :ladyhaha:

I understand the point being made, but what other choice is there? Random numbers and if your number is called you get to go backstage?  I understand Gaga did this in her beginning stages, but how would they control the masses?

It's a shi.tty, greedy move honestly. I love Gaga a ton, but I wouldn't ever pay for a meet and greet. And yea, all those rich marcmonster stans can come and drag me, but they can fuk off.

There isn’t really another opinion tho. Fans always want to meet their idols but it would be unhealthy if it for free. There would come hundreds of fans every day. So to manage it you give it a prize I guess.

I’m always conflicted about this. I used to be like: I’m never gonna pay to see an artist. But over the years I started thinking that I actually really want to meet Gaga:laughga:

What you want Lady Gaga🥂 What you want with Christina🥂

Honestly, I would never pay to meet a person. It's just greedy and non sensical. Labels always make it all about the money.

I think it's unfortunate how labels treat m&g, but there has to be security, insurance & other costs that you might not think of. I think the price that bigger artists charge is outrageous but there's not much we can do about it. The people who can afford to pay for those m&g tickets are just gonna continue to do so. I would probably consider it myself if I had the money for those types of tickets. I'm sure the artists who charge 1,500$ vs the ones that charge 50$ are just as grateful of the fans who buy m&g tickets. It's just a matter of supply :huntyga: and demand.

I totally agree with him. Fans already support by buying their album and buying the expensive concert tickets. I don’t think it makes sense to pay these ridiculous to meet anyone for about 5 minutes.

I don't think major artists should charge for M&Gs but like that Blake guy said, musicians who tour clubs/theaters usually meet fans who hit a certain merch threshold ($10-$20), which I think is fine because fans buy merch regardless and merch sales truly help smaller touring acts. If Taylor Swift can meet thousands of fans every tour and never charge for M&Gs, there's literally no reason for $$$$ M&Gs.  Plus, the experience sucks if you're just standing in front of a wall.

As a teenager, I met all my favs without spending any money and I had wonderful experiences that you could never plan, purchase, etc. If I wanted to meet the 1975, I'd just go to their hotel and wait around.

Nobody's forcing an artist to meet a certain number of fans, though. Imo inviting just a few lucky fans backstage or something at a show would be a much more authentic experience, and would make the whole thing more memorable and enjoyable for everyone involved.

If it were free, the artist would never get out the venue. The high prices make it so the artist can still meet the fans while controlling how many people they meet. It sucks everyone can't meet their faves but that's just how it is. Save up.

He can say all he wants. I personally all for it. I'd rather pay than standing for hours just to see a glimpse of her for a few seconds.

I'd rather pay because when we meet, it will till be in her working environment. The backstage. So I won't bother her personal time. And I will be guaranteed to meet her up close and personal and I will get actual clear professionally taken picture of mysef with her. Not some selfie that can always not working the way I wanted because plenty of circumstances, especially with fighting for space with fellow fans who are push and shoving for all sides.

Hate it or love it, that is the purpose, to filter out people. Especially those who sells autographs and photos on eBay. So it will be in humane condition and creates convenient environment where artists and fans can let their hair down and talk.

I thought m & g were usually packaged as part of a VIP package and not sold alone? In that sense, it makes complete sense imo. Separate m & g that people pay for is a bit silly.

But I don't blame the artist—this sort of thing is normalized and pushed by the labels.

Taylor Swift and Gaga both illustrate how massive artists can put together one of a kind backstage experiences without monetizing interaction or it feeling like endless, unpaid work (debatable with Gaga at the end of the BTWB but...)  If a one-on-one photo isn't the center of the M&G experience, there's a lot of room for artists to play around.

Like I've been saying, it's not like I was suggesting having some free-for-all disaster.

Have the artist or tour staff pick a few lucky people out of the crowd, where they can meet in a controlled space after the show. That way they have time to chat for a bit, take some candid/professional photos, and still be done in 1/16th of the time a paid m&g would take.

No matter how you set it up, not everyone is going to be able to meet their fave artist. I just don't think that monetizing it is the end-all solution.

I'm assuming we're talking about Gagz...i hate to be a downer but my ex paid a boatload of money to 'meet' her on JWT and got to stand in a room with her for 15 seconds, no 'meeting' or words spoken.

Seems like when labels make artists do these endless m&g photos one after another, it really ruins the vibe for both the artist and the fan :(
