1 single before the album used to be the status quo... But now in the age of streaming where everyone has access to the whole album at once what Ariana Grande did makes more sense

 

It becomes much harder to push a single once most ppl have heard the album so if u wanna promote a specific track the easiest way is just release it before the album

Third or fourth singles still kinda  matter when it comes to radio though. And when it's a hit on radio, regardless if fans have heard it already, it'll reach an audience that are casual listeners/the gp.

The same logic could apply way back when physical singles were still selling. Those who had the album had already heard all the songs but third or fourth or fifth singles still worked and would work today as well.
