ARTPOP is a misstep for a myriad of reasons but I wouldn't say its the anomaly. In retrospect from years of my stanning research, ARTPOP was indeed a cynical phase in her life intended to be politically incorrect and rebellious. But imo the only true valid act of "artistic rebellion" in that entire era was her SXSW performance. At first glance people just found it crass which it was but in listening to her speak on it I found it to be the only truly "punk" (using the term extra loose here) moment of the entire album cycle. It was quite the expression of her feelings on her own sexual assault in a way in which people want to scoff at from your average local to the jaded gay art snob Robyn stan that finds her try hard but I think thats what makes it so effective. It was a giant f*ck you moment of freedom of expression, aimed at everyone including the fans and for all these reasons I respect it. I like and enjoy ARTPOP for what it is while still finding it a misstep in her career trajectory but I have to admit that one performance, to me, was quite quintessentially Gaga and encapsulated what the whole messy vibe of that era was intended to be. She was convinced that LG5 was gonna be ARTPOP act 2 from the day she released it and if it wasn't for her management and messy era, it would have been. Y'all can't say she didn't care about ARTPOP when she has a whole tour named Enigma centered about Petga. The album was supposed to have a whole app, be a visual album, was presented as the album of the millenium... She has NEVER been so hyped about her own album than she was about ARTPOP. If it reached its full potential it would have been her most iconic work. I'm glad there are other people who can see ARTPOP as a MESSAGE and piece of ART. If you try to critique it by its charts performance and musical details and whatnot, you just didn't get it.
