I was expecting more...the song and the video lacks something. Blood, Sweat & Tears is better

the scars on my mind are on replay.

Well find me those songs!

Songs with bland inspirational "you're good the way you are" misfit lyrics? They've been everywhere the last few years, in all sorts of genres catering to the mainstream actually :awkney: Even metal bands have been influenced. This is one of my least favorite misfit songs in the latter genre. Equally bland, equally boring.

"We are the others,
We are the cast outs,
We're the outsiders
But you can't hide us,
We are the others,
We are the cast outs
You're not out there on your own"

...

Normal is not the norm,
It's just a uniform
Forget about the norm,
Take off your uniform,
We are all beautiful"

P!nk has been doing it for forever too, like in this easy on the ear self-empowerment "anthem":

"So raise your glass if you are wrong,
In all the right ways,
All my underdogs,
We will never be never be, anything but loud
And nitty gritty, dirty little freaks
Won't you come on and come on and raise your glass,
Just come on and come on and raise your glass

...

So if you're too school for cool,
And you're treated like a fool,
You can choose to let it go
We can always, we can always,
Party on our own"

And then there's this Kelly Clarkson mess:

"We are all misfits living in a world on fire
Sing it for the people like us, the people like us

...

They can't do nothing to you, they can't do nothing to me
This is the life that we choose, this is the life that we bleed
So throw your fists in the air, come out, come out if you dare
Tonight we're gonna change forever

...

Oh, people like us we've gotta stick together
Keep your head up nothing lasts forever
Here's to the damned, to the lost and forgotten"

It's a cliché by now that has completely lost its momentum. If chicks like friggin' Kelly Clarkson are painting themselves as weird and outcasts then who the hell are they representing?

It's sad that it's become the go-to strategy to gain a quick following. Basically leeching onto people who are lonely and in need of support. It's awful.

Listening to the leak. The lyrics are pure cringe. Another pretty girl trying to cash in on the overdone misfit theme, and like four years too late at that. Super disappointing.

Composition is a bore too.

:madge:

Let this flop and let her career end pls. (This was just a joke. Obvi.)

Edit: Jesus Christ, apparently I'm now a pressed LM who is threatened by Ava :awkney: I just don't like this song wtf. If this forum is gonna turn into a "if you don't like Ava you're like a Madonna fan about Gaga in 2009" I'm so out of here, that is so unnecessary. Stop projecting your **** on me.

didy, i like you, but why is a self-acceptance song 'four years late' ???

now that gags & other huge girls cashed out with it, it's wrong for anyone else to make empowering songs that aren't pure feminism? :emma:

It just feels insincere to me. It's become too widespread to be powerful imo. These days being a misfit is almost the norm. How can you be interesting without being weird, that seems to be the message this host of songs has delivered to the world. The actual misfits and outcasts are even less represented than before now that pop culture has claimed their territory.

It just makes me upset. All these pop chicks are doing is creating a situation in which young people feel like they represent them so they'll more easily spend money on their music. Might sound pessimistic but that is honestly what I believe.

that's pretty much what every single one of mainstream artists do, gaga included. i completely get you, i despise it myself, i guess the difference is that i just don't think about it at all, 'cause that gets you nowhere. do i agree with it? not at all. but i guess that kinda proves i don't take this music to the high heavens of art, it's just decent pop music for me. and it just so happens that ava & her music please my ears. you don't need to wish for her career to end if she doesn't click for you :emma:

But at least Gaga presented some interesting music, lyrics, visuals and references that could be enjoyed on top of the easy fascination with her "weirdness". Plus, she was never this transparent about attracting the weird kids. She didn't just represent bullied high school teens, she presented herself as an art nerd.

I don't know. It might have been similar deep down but to me it was a far more impressive attempt anyway that I can at least appreciate for its genius. What Ava and other singers are doing is just cheap.

I don't know how many times I have to repeat that was just a joke :air: Why did people suddenly forget that it's normal and fun for pop stans to be way too extra, shady and insulting? :oprah:

were you not here during BTW? she tried, and pretty much did, pull every single living creature that wasn't in the slightest resemblance of what was popular back then towards her. if that's not completely attracting, & even adjusting to a certain type of a community, then idk what is, especially considering how normal & toned down joanna & asib were.

don't get me wrong, i respect her so much for that, but it's obvious that most of it was to please her label & be a money-making machine, as i'm pretty sure she's stated in a few interviews.

however, let's not bash on gaga or ava, i adore them both for some reason, and they're completely different artists. the fact that we're comparing them at all is absurd, one is 10 years into her career, the other one just released her 2nd single off of her debut.

That song get a free pass for me because it's fantastically composed and produced :laughga: It's not just some quickly slapped together anthem for the freaks (underscored by the fact that most of her fans don't even like it lol). You can tell she put a lot of passion and thought into the sound and feel of that song.

The whole BTW album is basically the example of how you do this "I'm weird too, you're not alone" the right way.
